One should not rejoice, And one should also prevent doing other things. Therefore, he does not rejoice in the heavenly realms, nor does he fear the hells of sentient beings. Abandoning joy and fear, this transforms into the essence of remembering virtue, which is abiding in mindfulness. Furthermore, one should remember the eighth thing related to mindfulness: it is good that my mindfulness abides, because the appearances of unwholesome dharmas have all declined, exhausted, destroyed, and abandoned. Furthermore, the arising of unwholesomeness in the mind causes my virtuous thoughts to decline, and everything of mine is obstructed. Therefore, I should generate virtuous thoughts again. Thus, the mindfulness of the object and characteristics becomes filled from one to another. When the mind becomes one and gathers together, this makes mindfulness workable. This is able to hold the mind from the unstable waves of the river's force and from places of error like enemies. Furthermore, one should remember the ninth thing related to mindfulness: like a day, one should remember the qualities of the Buddha. One should always respect the sacred Dharma. One should have faith in the lamas and also abide in their practice. The mind should operate very evenly. One should view it like a yoke. One should remember the intention to benefit all sentient beings. Therefore, the thing related to mindfulness will bear fruit, and ultimately one will attain Nirvana. Furthermore, one should remember the tenth thing related to mindfulness: the mind should operate very evenly. Like this, these four great fears will come: old age, sickness, death, and decay. He is constantly terrified by those great enemies, so he does not think of happiness. He also sees four things as very unstable: life, health, youth, and abundance. He is constantly afraid of those four things that were previously shown, and he becomes accustomed to other instability, he will not be robbed by objects, nor will he be dominated by joyful desire. Mindfulness will abide, and it will be able to exhaust the mountain of afflictions. Furthermore, one should remember the eleventh thing related to mindfulness: one should not distinguish the Sangha by individuals, and one should not be diligent and practice laziness. Who

Because of what does the ability to clearly distinguish people decline? That which neither harms nor benefits is that which creates a gap between minds, and that kind of mindfulness becomes difficult to practice, thereby focusing on harmless things. Furthermore, remember the twelfth connection of mindfulness. Focus on constantly listening to the sacred Dharma. Possessing that focus, one can guard the Dharma one holds and firmly grasp it. One can clearly distinguish between dharmas that are with fault and without fault, just as one can see objects in the darkness with a lamp. The lamp of Dharma spoken by the Bhagavan can see dharmas that are with fault and without fault. In this way, when mindfulness arises that is extremely equally abiding, one will not be controlled by the net of afflictions, nor will one be controlled by Mara. In this way, also remember the twelfth connection. Furthermore, remember the thirteenth connection of mindfulness, which is that in every instant, mindfulness arises to accomplish the own-nature of body, mind, and feelings. One should separately understand these close-abiding mindfulnesses and firmly grasp them in the mind. Through those mindfulnesses, one will not rely on carelessness, but will rely on carefulness, so that one will not be controlled by the Lord of Death, but will become autonomous, mindfulness will not decline, one will not act at inappropriate times, one will not act in inappropriate places, and one will not act in inappropriate behaviors. These connections are the connections among all mindfulnesses. Furthermore, regarding meditating on the fourteen realms of mind, if one meditates well, one will achieve great taming and great tranquility, become extremely pure, and will not be robbed by carelessness. For example: faith, diligence, complete tranquility, revering and serving the teacher, completely abandoning evil friends, being accustomed to the Buddha's teachings, being accustomed to proper attention, completely abandoning excitement, believing in the causes and effects of Dharma and non-Dharma, and forgetting past desires.
