Thus it is practiced. In this way, passing from one to another, each moment, from the time of entering the womb, being born, and until death, and from dwelling in the womb, from youth, adolescence to the ultimate end of old age, thus becoming accustomed, whether it be that Bhikshu or another. At the time of death, one will not fall into the hands of the Lord of Death, nor will one see the transformation into an ugly face, nor will one see those other evildoers. Whatever is well cultivated in relation to the thirteen mindfulnesses will bring benefit, happiness, and ultimately lead to Nirvana. What are the thirteen? Namely, having mindfulness, dwelling near mindfulness, and having unscattered mindfulness. Dwelling near those mindfulnesses, for example, upon seeing the body of a woman, whether beautiful or ugly, one should remember that within it are impure things, a source of foul smells, and impermanent, like the holes of an outer latrine. Unwavering mindfulness means that when wandering in the direction of a city or village for alms, or going to other places, one will not be swayed by the perception of women. Why is that? Because one dwells near mindfulness. This is the first connection with mindfulness. Furthermore, the connection with mindfulness is that even upon seeing delightful outer groves, delightful rivers, delightful lotus ponds, and delightful gardens, one should establish mindfulness in this way: whatever the nature of delight is, its time will come later; those things that cause the minds of children to be exceedingly attached will become rotten, withered, ugly, the petals will fall, and the leaves will scatter. Even if they become like that, they will not remain forever. Alas! What delight is there in these things? Thus, one connects with mindfulness. Thus, dwelling near mindfulness, without craving, one will not be disturbed by the forms of inner and outer objects, nor will one be harmed by demons. Furthermore, for the sake of its meaning and benefit, one should remember the third connection with mindfulness. How does one remember? What is the object of mindfulness in connection with mindfulness? It is remembering whatever one has previously eaten, slept, enjoyed, or relied upon as an object.

He does not contemplate from there, nor does he keep it firmly in mind. In that way, he thinks that the faculties of those individual children are not satisfied, and in that way he connects with mindfulness. Furthermore, the fourth connection with mindfulness is to remember: wherever one obtains many implements due to factors such as gain, respect, bedding, and medicine for healing illnesses, one does not connect with joy, nor does one completely cling to them. Like this, if one values gain and respect, the practitioner will decline, and that person will also have their skin broken and flesh rotten, flesh rotten and tendons severed, tendons severed and bones broken, bones broken and marrow exhausted; gain and respect will do that. Gain and respect are the cause of obstructing all virtuous dharmas, and abiding closely in good mindfulness is abiding on one side. Furthermore, the fifth connection with mindfulness is to remember: one does not wander extensively in villages, cities, and regions; one does not rely on cities; one does not make it one's business to speak words related to the local people; one does not dwell in commotion and joy. Like this, dwelling in villages, cities, and regions causes the mind to be distracted, and one is also unable to do one's own work. In that way, mindfulness arises from seeing those things as they are. Furthermore, the sixth connection with mindfulness is to remember: in that way, seeing it as a fault, one dwells in cemeteries, under trees, in piles of grass, in mountain crevices, and in empty houses, and one does not dwell together with anyone, one does not mingle. Like this, the practitioner who does not mingle will obtain virtuous dharmas, and what should be abandoned will also be abandoned. Furthermore, the seventh connection with mindfulness is to remember: one does not generate attachment even to the stories of gods, nor does one become disgusted with the stories of hell beings. He remembers like this: the end of the gods is falling, accompanied by harm, and being under the control of the messengers of Yama. Hell beings are also led by karma, and afterwards
