The characteristics of these should be explained. Among them, what is called 'lack of faith' is the absence of devotion, that is, the lack of devotion to all dharmas. What is called 'laziness' is the abandonment of diligence, which is laziness itself. What is called 'forgetfulness' is the lack of recollection of dharmas. What is called 'mental wandering' is the transformation into multiple objects. What is called 'corrupt wisdom' is the unskilled mind. What is called 'improper attention' is that because of the wrong path, one does not properly contemplate the dharmas and thinks of the impure as pure. What is called 'adhering to wrong views' is holding onto wrong views and firmly adhering to them. What is called 'excitement' is the unpacified mind. What is called 'ignorance' is not understanding the dharmas of the three realms. What is called 'carelessness' is not practicing virtuous dharmas; these afflictions are the great earth dharmas that should be diminished. What are the other ten minor earth dharmas? They are: anger, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, pride, malice, shamelessness, and lack of embarrassment. These ten dharmas are included in the minor earth and are the causes of the minor earth that are associated with the future. Among them, what is called 'anger' is the disturbed and angry mind. What is called 'resentment' is holding hatred towards enemies. What is called 'concealment' is the death of the three sins. What is called 'vexation' is adhering to what is not dharma. What is called 'illusion' is deception, that is, engaging in deception. The twelve sources should be understood, so what are their main contents? They are the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, which are the internal sources. And their forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and dharmas, which are the external sources, should be fully understood. And the three aspects of characteristic, nature, and predominant arising should be fully understood. Among them, the characteristic of the eye is related to the four great elements and can distinguish various colors; its cause is the eye. Similarly, the ear and so on also have their own characteristics.

It should be understood from the direction of one's own place, that is its characteristic. If one wants to know what the essence of the principal is, the so-called essence is non-inverted. From five causes and conditions, eye consciousness arises. From what does it arise? It arises from the eye, form, light, space, and attention. Ear consciousness does not arise in this way, because sound can be heard in darkness or non-darkness. Therefore, light is not the principal, as it has no effect whatsoever. Similarly, for the nose, tongue, body, and mind, light is not the principal, as it has no effect whatsoever. For mind consciousness, light may arise or may not arise. How does it arise, and how does it not arise? If the object of mind consciousness experienced by eye consciousness does not have light, it will not arise. For the others, it will arise even without light. Furthermore, it should be fully understood that if the predominant element of arising in the sense bases is not present, it will not arise. How can it be known that it will not arise if it is not present? The four great elements are interdependent, and they increase and decrease significantly. Among them, for the eye, the elements of fire and earth are predominant. For the nose and body, the element of wind is predominant. For the tongue, the element of water is predominant. For the ear, the element of space is predominant. In the neck and orifices, the element of space is predominant, so it can be seen that it is suppressed. Therefore, the grasping of the ear arises. Thus, the major and minor elements of the sense bases should be understood separately. Furthermore, these sense bases should be considered: what is near-grasping, and what is far-grasping? Among them, the nose, tongue, and body are near-grasping. The eye does not grasp too far or too near. The ear does not grasp too far. The nose grasps very near, and for those who experience unpleasant odors of nasal mucus that is very near, they smell it. Similarly, the ear also hears the sound of wind entering inside. Consciousness
