They cannot comprehend the worldly reality, and with a mind stolen by heedlessness, they cannot comprehend the transcendent either. Similarly, with a mind stolen by heedlessness, even seeing form, they do not comprehend it as it is, nor do they attend to the body in relation to the body. With a mind engaged in the four noble truths, they do not examine that form, nor do they seek that reality. Likewise, the heedless do not see the worldly meaning, nor do they see the transcendent. Furthermore, similarly, with a mind stolen by heedlessness, even hearing sound with the ear, they do not know whether it is the meaning of singing or speaking, whether it is their own meaning or meaningless; thus, they do not understand the worldly meaning. They do not understand the teaching of the sutras, the sections of verses, the sections of chanted verses, the sections of prophecies, the sections of self-utterances, the sections of narratives, the sections of birth stories, the sections of such occurrences, the sections of biographies, the sections of extensive teachings, the sections of marvels, and the sections of teachings on definitive analysis, nor can they understand the meaning of what is said. One whose mind is stolen by heedlessness, at the time of death, comes under the power of the lord of death, Yama. Furthermore, when the nose of one whose mind is stolen by heedlessness smells an odor, they do not know whether it is a pleasant odor, an unpleasant odor, or the scent of a flower. Similarly, they do not know the worldly odor, nor do they know the transcendent odor. They do not know the scent of incense, and at that time, the heedless one never offers incense to the Three Jewels; thus, the heedless do not know odors. Furthermore, those whose minds are stolen by heedlessness cannot know taste; even when tasting, their minds are occupied elsewhere, and they do not know whether the taste is sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, astringent, or bland, because their minds are stolen elsewhere and they cannot know. Those whose minds are stolen by heedlessness do not know the transcendent taste, nor do they know the taste of the Dharma. Furthermore, those whose minds are stolen by heedlessness do not know the touch of the body, nor do they engage in activities dependent on the body, nor do they engage in household activities, the end of work.

One does not rely on others, nor does one do good deeds. Because one does not accumulate household items, etc., one's household will become poor. Nor does one engage in transcendental activities, nor rely on the lamas. One is not of the nature of speaking frankly and prostrating. Because of the mind stolen by carelessness, one does not even understand touch. Likewise, the mind does not understand purity and impurity, good and bad, prophesied and unprophesied dharmas. When that person dies, he is threatened by the punishment of death and suffers greatly, becoming a servant of Yama. Therefore, the one dharma that should be abandoned is carelessness. The two dharmas that should be cultivated are shamatha and vipassana. As it is said, these two are very excellent guides that lead to liberation. Among them, what is called shamatha is that which pacifies dharmas that have arisen and have not arisen. Vipassana is seeing the body, dharma, mind, mental dharmas, non-mental dharmas, the white side, and the black side. As it is said, three faults should be abandoned. Among them, lust should be abandoned by the impure, hatred should be abandoned by love, and ignorance should be abandoned by wisdom. Thus, there are three antidotes. The antidotes to the three antidotes are also three, but those will not be abandoned by carelessness. Later, when the time of death truly comes, that person will become a servant of Yama. What are the four noble truths? Like this: suffering, origin, cessation, and path, as it is said. Among them, suffering is the suffering of body and mind. Origin is the origin of the skandhas, elements, and sources. Cessation is peace. The path is the eightfold path. These four noble truths should be cultivated. As it is said, the five that should be well guarded are the five objects: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. These five should be guarded. What is the truth that should be completely known? That is, the six that should be guarded, like this: the six senses, such as the eye, should guard their objects. As it is said, what are the seven that should be well known? Like this:
