The gods, seeing these manifestations that were extremely terrifying and caused great panic, looked at Indra and said: "Indra, are these not Asuras that we have never seen before? Why are you, and others familiar with you, indifferent to these Asuras who are tying up the gods and escorting them away? These Asura forms cover the entire Mount Meru, and we have never seen them before in the battles between the gods and Asuras. Moreover, this place has never been visited by Asuras before. Indra, has the Dharma declined? You, the protectors of the world, the lord of the Thirty-Three, have always saved us in due time. Are there no upholders of righteousness, no ascetics, no Brahmins, no respecters of elders in the world? Indra, are there no offerings to the Buddha, no offerings to the Dharma, no offerings to the Sangha, no seekers of the truth of cause and effect in the world? Why are these gods so terrifying? Lord of the Thirty-Three, please ride the elephant king, the son of Earth Protector, and prepare for battle! Please have the gods who hold various weapons put on their armor! Who are these who are exceedingly powerful, whose forms are exceedingly difficult to bear, who completely destroy others? These gods' powers, or even mantras, cannot repel them. If you, who are particularly excellent, cannot endure these, what need to mention those of you who are inferior in form, color, and power? These messengers of Yama are called black messengers, and they bind beings who are near death, closely connected by karma and afflictions, and lead them into hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. This is the nature of all beings belonging to all of samsara. Beings belonging to samsara have eight dharmas, what are those eight? Being born and then dying is the first state. Being sick without illness is the second state. Being young and then growing old is the third state. Losing what one has is the fourth state.
