Before Indra, the minds of the goddesses were exceedingly joyful. They carried lutes, pottery drums, copper drums, flutes, and panpipes, singing, making merry, and indulging in joy in every way. Indra himself rode on the elephant named Earth Protector's Son, praised and surrounded by the other music leaders. They played together with the five instruments of music, namely, they played around in front with zithers, drums, cymbals, flutes and songs, making him happy. That elephant king was larger than a mountain in form. Riding on that elephant who was like a great moving mountain was as beautiful as the sun's rays shining brightly in the summer on the top of a snow-covered mountain, free from clouds and darkness. Thus, Indra, together with the assembly of gods and goddesses who cut off the gates of evil destinies, were completely satisfied in mind, in accordance with good wisdom, and surrounded by all. In groves surpassing in lapis lazuli, silver, crystal, agate, great emerald, padmaraga, pure gold and the best, and nearby delightful groves, they wandered, played, and rejoiced, experiencing that which is truly most perfect and exceedingly blissful. Although it was so, he, having truly accomplished his desires, knowing that the perfections of the world arise and perish, had neither joy nor agitation. Knowing that the end of all perfections is to decline, thus abiding in his own karma, those beings who are destroyed by the winds of karma wander in hells, among pretas, and among animals. Where do the gods who are separated from all this company of gods and goddesses go after they die? Alas, all these deceived ignorant individuals will experience great karmic results. He thought thus in his heart. Then, at that time, Indra spoke the following verses: Clouds gather in the sky, and are scattered everywhere by the wind. Just as gatherings also disperse, so are the living beings of samsara. Just as people see flowers blooming in each season, all seasons...

If it turns to ashes, just as things appear, they each perish. Like this, the well-adorned gods rejoice when the time comes. If the auspicious time turns to ashes, just as things appear, they each perish. Just as in season after season, trees grow many leaves, if season after season turns to ashes, all of those will completely perish. Like this, the gods are like leaves, this existence is like a tree. Happiness always perishes, there is no stability or permanence. Just as when it rains, rain falls from the sky without ceasing. Like this, all these pleasures will pass away without returning. Just as the feathers of a peacock are blown everywhere by the wind, that is to perish, the basis of happiness is like that. Just as when wood is put into fire, it will surely be thoroughly burned. Like this, time is like fire, people are like dry wood. Even if hundreds or thousands, these come and go, like this, those deluded by desire will not truly awaken. By the illusory eyes of desire and ignorance, everything is completely filled. Just as there is no good fortune, like this, the gods are completely deceived. Thus, Indra, having generated compassion for those gods, then again mounted the elephant, the son of Earth Protector, surrounded by the assembly of gods, playing various musical instruments, proceeded to the assembly place of the gods, the Good Dharma Hall. The other gods went to offer to those who resided in the Good Dharma Hall and had attained victory, and the gods who resided in the hanging jewels, as long as they were not satisfied with desire, created and accumulated lovely, pleasing desires, and until they each truly experienced them, they would play and enjoy themselves in the gardens and nearby groves. After dying from that, just as karma leads, they will be born in hells, among pretas, and as animals. If they have a shared fortune with humans and are born among humans, then due to having a common cause with that, they will be born into a vast lineage, possessing great happiness, being tall and beautiful, and in the central region.

To be born, to possess good qualities, to be very wealthy, to have sons and grandsons, to live long, to possess harmless servants, to be pleasing to all people, to be fully endowed, and to see that one will become a king or a great minister. Then, the monk who knows the ripening of the fruits of karma contemplates the abode of the gods of the Thirty-Three. Through the knowledge gained from hearing, he sees how the abodes of the gods are harmonious and consistent. There, he wonders which beings will be born, and then, through the knowledge gained from hearing, he observes. Those who have perfected virtuous deeds, who have completely restrained their body, speech, and mind, who are without deceit, who do not harm others, whose wisdom is always vast, who are upright and virtuous, who abandon evil friends, who by all means abandon evil friends, who do not associate with them, who do not speak to them, who do not even glance at them, who do not walk with them on the road. Even when they see them, they always abandon them, and they also abandon their friends. They rely on monks and always have the attitude of listening to the Dharma. After hearing it, they can also distinguish between virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral phenomena. What should be abandoned, they abandon, and what should not be abandoned, they also know should not be abandoned, and they keep it well in mind, being very calm, mindful, not controlled by the mind, maintaining mindfulness, without craving, upholding the seven types of discipline, without the slightest error, fearing even the smallest faults, being pure and without defilement in all actions, like pure gold without flaws, abandoning actions such as killing and taking what is not given, and also giving alms and doing meritorious deeds. How then do beings attain liberation? For example, a king or a minister seizes a man and a woman who are stealing together, binds them, and leads them to the south gate of the city, beating drums and proclaiming their names and surnames, and who their friends are.
