In an instant, one frolics and engages in worldly affairs, contemplating what is Dharma and what is not. A virtuous person does not commit evil themselves and does not delight in associating with sinful friends. The holy person who purifies everything completely places even those who have utterly violated their vows on the path of virtue, shows them the right path, and sows the seeds of virtuous deeds in the good field of beings. Their mind is refined like gold, and the happiness of practicing the ultimate of virtuous deeds with a stainless mind is attained in this life and the next, and each is truly experienced. What is it like to abandon killing, and what are its aspects? Here, for the sake of cultivating the seeds of all desired flowers, one places a mixture of smoke and poison, touches and kills wriggling insects, bees, large flesh flies, or centipedes. Thinking thus: 'May my flower seeds or tender branches, flowers, or fruits not be damaged,' one uses poison to kill insects, and does not touch with one's hand the insects in old barley and grapes. If one drinks without discernment and kills the insects born therein, one will fall. One should discern those insects and beings and then drink, and one should not drink what has been left for a long time, what has been born small from heat and moisture, or what has been born from intoxicants. These subtle aspects are the abandonment of killing. What is it like to abandon taking what is not given, and what are its aspects? What are its aspects? Here, one always desires famine to occur, and if famine occurs, then I will obtain eight times the profit of cowries. May the measuring vessels of the land of Magadha (one of the sixteen great kingdoms of ancient India) become very small, may barley, wheat, and other grains, as well as grains that ripen in sixty days, not grow, and may I alone possess them. Thus one thinks, contemplating obstructing the affairs of sentient beings, thinking thus: 'I shall harm sentient beings, I shall gather,' thus repeatedly thinking, and if sentient beings...

Those with little merit, when they encounter a bad time, are overjoyed, thinking, "What I have hoped for, what I have loved, has finally arrived!" Thus, they use non-compliant measures, lack morality, are lazy in their efforts, and deceive others with barley, wheat, rice, and so on. Therefore, when they have the thought of deceiving, it is the preparation stage of karma. When they actually deceive, it is the actual act of karma. When they deceive sentient beings and feel satisfied and happy in their hearts, it is the completion of karma. Therefore, one should avoid and stop the aforementioned evil deeds. Even if one is poor, one should not deceive others with dishonest means, and even if others do so, one should not rejoice or praise them. If one encounters a year of poor harvest, even if one is a merchant, one should trade honestly and obtain profit in a way that is in accordance with the Dharma, through proper thought. In this way, they avoid killing and taking what is not given. How does one turn from non-virtue to virtue? Here, a noble person behaves properly, practices virtue, and always acts for the benefit of themselves and others. Even if they are poor, making a living in a difficult way, they approach givers and patrons with great effort and learn from them. They understand the results of giving and personally experience the results of giving. After personally experiencing it, they give again and again to those who are helpless, afflicted with suffering, or those who have attained, are approaching, or have entered the third dhyana. This is because by perfecting the results of good deeds, they obtain enjoyment in accordance with the Dharma, and they give through these three. These three are: when they have the thought, "I should give alms," it is the preparation stage of karma. When they actually give alms, it is the actual act of karma. When they give and experience joy in their hearts, and think in this way, it is the completion of karma. Those who perform one thousand two hundred kinds of good deeds in this way, after death, will be reborn in the happy realms of the heavens, where they will enjoy a good life.
