was seen. There, thinking, "Where will these sentient beings be born?" he investigated with the wisdom arising from hearing. Those who become virtuous men with virtuous thoughts, who have abandoned killing and taking what is not given, also cause others to do so, and thoroughly establish themselves on the path of virtue. How many ways are there to abandon killing? That is, towards others, at all times and in all circumstances, not causing harm, not allowing harm to be caused, and not rejoicing in it. Not playing with killers, not associating with them, not speaking even a word, not uttering any afflictive words, not walking on the road with those who do evil. What is it like not to kill? That is, abandoning those actions that deceive, such as killing deer or birds with the sound of songs or music, or with the sound of lutes, drums, or flutes, or killing deer or birds hidden in the mountains, and also establishing others in these actions, liberating them, scolding them, not allowing them to do it, and not even thinking about it in the mind—these ways are abandoning killing. What is it like to abandon taking what is not given? That is, for those who cheat and deceive in measuring and pouring, who have the mind of a merchant, who do not conform to the Dharma, and do not follow the Dharma, they deceive the world by taking what is not given. What is deception like, and how many ways are there? For example, filling the scales with sand and using sand to deceive the measuring, they do not regard these as faults, but are deceiving sentient beings. These actions should be dispelled, such as for oneself, or for children and wives, or for accumulating wealth, or for evil friends, never take what is not given. Do not fall into the realm of pretas and animals. The result is unpleasant, the result of taking what is not given is unpleasant, like this, do not do it yourself, and completely abandon what is related to the causes. Also dissuade others from doing so, do not rejoice in it, and practice the path of virtue.

And also correctly and completely establish it, so that such a person can benefit himself and others. What is the joy of giving? It is that for those who have no cause and no result, or who cross the ocean, or cross the wilderness monastery, or rely on others, whatever wealth is accumulated, they cultivate compassion for the helpless, afflicted and suffering, generate reverence, and give with joy as a priority, or attain the second dhyana, or give to other suffering people. These are the ones who are very happy to give. What is the giving of life to sentient beings? For example, when a fisherman or a birdman catches fish and then sells them, he redeems the remaining lives with money and liberates them. He puts it in his own water, releases it and completely establishes it, and his mind and intention are also very happy. He also lets others do the same. He is very happy. He is very involved in virtuous deeds. He thinks: Alas, I have done well! I will do it again, and I will let others do it too. In this way, the accumulation of good deeds, the path of good deeds, and the end of good deeds can benefit oneself and others, and one abandons killing and stealing. In order to benefit sentient beings again, or to completely protect life, or to give life, one abandons stealing. Oneself and others are also very happy to give, and oneself and others can keep the two kinds of precepts. The two kinds are oneself entering and returning. A person who has precepts can benefit himself and others, and when his body separates, after death, he will be reborn in a good realm, in the abode of the thirty-three gods in the heavenly realm, illuminated by various lights. After being born there, he also enjoys the fruits of good deeds, and is born in the abode illuminated by the light of various jewel images. At first, his body will emit light, and various images, colors, and garments will appear. His heavenly garments and

Ointment and various body ornaments surround the outside. When that deity first appeared, he thought to himself: Who was born here before me? He used his consciousness to recall what he had done before, recalling his previous life. He thought to himself: Alas, this is truly the fruit of good deeds close at hand! Alas, I am truly the ender of good deeds, it is good deeds that have caused me to be born here! As he thought that, from then on, the power of good deeds and the power of that deity's deeds and actions, initially only heard the harmonious sound of five musical instruments. Initially, those goddesses who wanted to appear and rejoice sang songs, the songs filling all places, mountaintops and caves, that wonderful sound making all the mountain goats and fat birds dance. Hearing those songs again and again, proud of being a hundred times fatter, in this way, initially only that song distracted his mind. After that, when he saw their images, initially desire and attachment arose together, in this way, he was distracted by many merits, seeing the goddesses who were satisfied with the images walking outwards, seeing those goddesses also adorning themselves with images and ornaments, possessing unparalleled images and ornaments. He thought to himself: Who are these people? Whose are these people? As soon as he had this thought, those goddesses, with minds that aroused extreme attachment, spoke in verses like this: The supreme cause of extreme attachment of all kinds is us. That is yours, O deity, please enjoy it in a blissful manner! In this way, he kept their verses in mind, seeing those blissful images, where those goddesses were, he was extremely inclined towards that place, wanting to see, wanting to touch, going there again and again. In this way, his third cause of attachment arose, the mind depending on the senses, depending on the senses, only depending on the mind's transformation of the object, in this way, the person with an attached mind also wanted to touch them, touching, extremely
