During that time, one feels joy and experiences the pleasure of satisfying desires and suffering. When that खत्म (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, literal Chinese meaning) ends, one dies again from that heavenly realm, and after death, just as karma approaches, one will be reborn in the hells, pretas, and animals. If, due to karma experienced in other lifetimes, one is born among humans equally with them, then, in accordance with that karma and cause, one will always be extremely happy. In a place with abundant food and drink, one will acquire many storehouses of wealth and grain, and one will see oneself becoming a king or a great minister. Then, again, the monk, knowing the ripening of karmic results, contemplates the realm of the Thirty-three Gods. With the knowledge arising from hearing, he sees how the abodes of the gods are situated near the edge of the forest. There, he wonders, which beings will be born here? He investigates with the knowledge arising from hearing, and sees that those noble individuals with kind hearts who have cultivated virtue, give alms to monks who have attained the first dhyana, and also encourage others to give, rejoice in giving, and make others rejoice in it, causing them to enter and abide in it. Thus, he himself rejoices in giving. How is he separated from killing and taking what is not given? Regarding this, how many aspects are there to the abandonment of taking what is not given? What are those aspects? This is when, upon entering a road, water jars or bowls are placed at wells, ponds, and rivers for the benefit of travelers, and others distinguish them in this way: This place is vast, and there is no water in other places, and we also do not have water vessels, water jars, or water bags. If we do not take water from that well, we will die of thirst. Even if urged in this way, he will not take it. Even knowing that he is thirsty, he will not take the water jar or bowl for fear of taking what is not given, nor will he rejoice in others taking it, but will prevent it and cause them to abide in the path of virtue.

Giving up taking what is not given is abstaining, and those aspects are such that even if it means losing one's life, one does not take what is not given. What is giving up killing, and how many aspects are there? Here, one does not kill oneself, and one also prevents others from doing so. One does not allow it at all. Even if it is done, one finds fault with it and scolds it greatly. This means that when small insects or tiny ants come from the window, or are on the covering, or are tormented by the sun or smoke, one does not harm them with a mind of universal harm. One does not cause them to be separated from life. If others do it, one also prevents them, finds fault with them, and firmly establishes them on the path of virtue. A virtuous person who does good himself and also firmly establishes others will, after leaving the body, be born in a happy realm, among the gods of the Thirty-Three Heavens, in a place adjacent to where they mingle. After being born there, one will also enjoy the fruits of well-performed actions, enjoying virtuous deeds. What arises from the ripening of actions is this: a garden called the Great Season appears. In that garden, the light of various jewels shines, the jewels Indra-nila and the light of beryl are immaculate and bright, various birds make pleasant sounds, and in the six seasons, trees and flowers flourish greatly. It is adorned with waterfalls, rivers, and ponds, and the lotuses of Indra-nila and beryl are delightful, adorned with high mountains of pure gold. Birds that swim in the water and walk on the land dwell in the crevices and beside the high mountains, appearing in various forms and postures, adorned with loud sounds, emanated from the fruits of virtuous deeds. The gods enjoy the fruits of those virtuous deeds, continuously enjoying happiness for a long time. Surrounded by thousands of various groups of goddesses, wearing divine garlands and garments, possessing various majestic forms, those goddesses sing and enjoy themselves nearby, wandering freely in that garden. When he wanders, the birds driven by virtuous deeds say this:
