Just as one feels happy when seeing a butter lamp, but it is extremely hot to touch. Ignorant moths, seeing the beautiful color of the butter lamp, fly into it and die. Similarly, childish ordinary beings, obscured by attachment, hatred, and ignorance, are like moths, viewing all desires with great delight. The simile of the butter lamp means that if beings enter the butter lamp like moths, they will be burned in the hells, as animals, and as pretas. Therefore, thinking that desires are enough, the monk will become free from attachment to those desires. Then, the monk further wonders, by what bonds are beings bound and constantly wander in samsara? The yogi, dwelling in the inner dharma, observing the dharma according to the dharma, investigates with the wisdom born from hearing or with the divine eye, and finds that this world is bound by two bonds: the bond of food and the bond of touch. Among these, the bond of food is of four types. What is coarse food? For example, the four abodes of humans, the six classes of desire realm gods, the eight great hot hells, and a portion of animals and pretas. Seeing that there is food of consciousness, for example, the food of meditative absorption of the form realm gods. The food of touch is that of birds and things seen by the eye. Another aspect is that childish ordinary beings of the desire realm, humans, pretas, animals, and hell beings, are all extremely attached to the touch of sexual intercourse. Those who rely on desire arise in the desire realm. The food of balanced focus is the formless attainments. Therefore, this world is bound by two bonds, and from the bonds of all afflictions and habitual tendencies, he is not free from attachment. He sees with the eye in another way, as it truly is, the forms that are to be cognized by the eye. And he also sees as it truly is the pleasure that arises from the gathering and contact of the eye, and the ripening of unpleasant actions with pleasure as the goal. Similarly,

What is known by eye-consciousness that becomes a place of unease? It is the suffering that arises from the contact of the gathering of the eye, and the ripening result that arises from pleasure, which is thoroughly known as it is. What is known by eye-consciousness? It is the pleasure that focuses on form, which is the unpleasant ripening result. Here, with the eye that observes the Dharma within the Dharma, one improperly attends and sees the object of focus. For the pleasure that arises in the present, one knows it as pleasure, and contemplates and savors it. Because of transformation, the ripening result becomes suffering, and it will surely mature in hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals. What are the actions that are not the pleasure that arises in the present, but become the ripening result of pleasure due to transformation? It is that, having seen the various forms known by eye-consciousness, the mind that turns towards the proper attention arising from the contact of the gathering of the eye has no attachment and no clinging. This is the ripening result of suffering that arises in the present. Because of transformation, one will be born into the happiness of gods and humans, and ultimately reach the other shore of Nirvana. Similarly, apply this to the dharmas of consciousness of ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind as well. Furthermore, how does a monk abide in equanimity towards the forms known by the eye? The yogi, the monk who abides observing the Dharma within the Dharma, having seen form with the eye, is not attached, not particularly attached, and is not turbid. There is no reproach, no delight, and no attention. He is not obscured by improper attention, but is equanimous. Because he does not attend to the place where suffering and happiness arise, he is equanimous. Moreover, the monk enters the nature of the excellent division of the sixth ground, that is, he enters the other ten grounds, such as: unimpededness, the special ground of the first dhyana, and the fourth dhyana. He enters the excellent division of the sixth ground. The path that arises from there and becomes the path of cessation is the noble path.
