Ārya Saddharma Smṛtyupasthāna. Ārya Saddharma Smṛtyupasthāna. In Sanskrit: Ārya Saddharma Smṛtyupasthāna. In Tibetan: The Noble Dharma of Mindfulness. Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Noble Śrāvakas. Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Rājagṛha, in the village of the Brahmins in the town of Nālandā. At that time, the venerable Śāradvatīputra, together with many monks, went to Rājagṛha for alms in the morning. At that time, many monks, while wandering for alms, went to where the other non-Buddhist practitioners were. Together with the other non-Buddhist practitioners, they engaged in Dharma talks that were pleasing and satisfying. The other non-Buddhist practitioners asked: "O Śākyas, is it true that your ascetic Gautama teaches that bodily punishment is unwholesome, undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and does not approve of the actions of others? We also teach that bodily punishment is undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and do not approve of the actions of others. O, does your ascetic Gautama teach that verbal punishment is undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and does not approve of the actions of others? We also teach that verbal punishment is undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and do not approve of the actions of others. Does your ascetic Gautama teach that mental punishment is undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and does not approve of the actions of others? We also teach that mental punishment is undesirable, ugly, and unpleasant, and do not approve of the actions of others. Then, what is the difference between your ascetic Gautama's Dharma and discipline and ours? What is the thought? What is the distinction? By what means is the ascetic Gautama's Dharma and discipline superior to our work? That ascetic Gautama is omniscient."

Thus it was proclaimed. When other non-Buddhist practitioners, the wandering ascetics, asked thus, the newly ordained monks, being separated from the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, neither rejoiced nor answered. Then, many monks, separated from the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, having performed the act of begging for alms, went to the village of Nalatī. Many monks, having taken their meal, were seated. Then, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra, on another day, having taken alms, went to the village of Nalatī. Then, many monks went to where the Venerable Sharadvatiputra was. Many monks reproached the Venerable Sharadvatiputra. Then, the Venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the many monks: "If I, Venerable ones, were to walk with you along the streets of Rajagriha, and at the crossroads and the triple junctions, and were to meet other non-Buddhist practitioners, wandering ascetics, then I would have refuted those other non-Buddhist practitioners, wandering ascetics, with words in accordance with the Dharma. Alas, I also came here after begging for alms from other places in the streets, crossroads, and triple junctions. Venerable ones, I did not even perceive the manner of questioning in which you spoke with the other non-Buddhist practitioners, wandering ascetics. Venerable ones, the Bhagavan, the all-seeing one, the one who is manifest in all things, the one who knows actions, results, and ripening, will, before too long, subdue all those with non-Buddhist views, and will teach the Dharma of actions, results, and ripening to the Shravakas, the Upasakas, the gods, and humans. Go and ask him. He will also teach all actions and ripening, and will show you what has not been seen by the world with gods, with demons, with Brahma, with ascetics and Brahmins. Whatever has not been manifest to us, the Bhagavan will also clearly show to you, he who so clearly understands actions, results, and ripening."

He did so. Then, many monks went to where the Blessed One was. Then, those monks saw the Blessed One dwelling in the daytime posture, manifestly blazing with his own net of light like Mount Sumeru, extremely bright with appearance like the sun of the day, extremely cool with peace like the moon of the night, extremely clear like a lake, deep like the ocean, unwavering like Mount Sumeru, brave like a lion, like parents, having become the refuge of all beings, his mind moistened with great compassion, having become the sole friend of all sentient beings, having become the basis of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, his body adorned with the thirty-seven great dharmas of the wings of enlightenment, satisfying the eyes of all embodied beings with great joy, suppressing the radiance of the moon and sun, the son of the Shakya king, possessing all eyes, his eyes free from the three stains, speaking the two truths, knowing the two sufferings, having meditated on the two meditations and made them manifest, having made manifest the fruit of the path, knowing the reality of cessation, possessing the eye that makes manifest the three realms, perfectly showing the three realms, knowing the reality of the eighteen elements, knowing the reality of faith and attention, a treasury of qualities, possessing his own eighteen qualities, liberated from the bonds of existence, possessing the ten powers, unafraid with the four fearlessnesses, possessing great compassion, always possessing the three close mindfulnesses. Then, many monks draped their robes over one shoulder, placed their right knee on the ground, bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, humbly bowed their heads, and sat down on one side. Then, many monks sent one monk to where the Blessed One was, went very close, and again, in the same way, bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, here, in the early morning, having dressed in robes and carrying a bowl, I went to Rajagriha for alms, as before, those other wandering non-Buddhist practitioners.
