thinking that it is painful by its very nature. He dwells in the second state of great affliction. Furthermore, how does that monk strive to destroy the third great affliction individually? Beings obscured by ignorance engage in misconduct with their bodies, engage in misconduct with their speech, and engage in misconduct with their minds. After death, they fall into evil destinies and are born in the hells of sentient beings. When, with right view preceding, one becomes free from ignorance, then one will engage in good conduct with the body, engage in good conduct with speech, and engage in good conduct with the mind, thereby knowing the suchness of what is dharma and what is not dharma. When one knows and discerns the suchness of those things that are dharma and not dharma, then the self-nature of the third great affliction will disappear. O monk, the three antidotes that destroy these three afflictions are such that the bonds of all the afflictions related to affliction and the latent tendencies abiding separately will be destroyed. For example, if the root of a tree is cut, the bark, the root, the branches, the leaves, the trunk, the twigs, the flowers, and the fruits, etc., all of those will rot or wither. Similarly, if those three are destroyed, then all afflictions will be destroyed. Then, how does that monk enter the eighth ground from the seventh ground? That practitioner of yoga, abiding by observing the inner dharma as dharma, sees with the wisdom arising from hearing or with the divine eye. How does the monk initially see with the eye as it is truly, and how do childish ordinary people become universally attached, intensely attached, and extremely deluded to the forms that are to be perceived by the eye? To that, the place that becomes a place of universal attachment is seeing a friend, a face, or a woman, or when seeing something other than that, universal attachment will arise. The place that becomes a place of hatred is becoming hateful towards rivals or things that may become rivals. By desire and hatred,

Obscured eyes cannot see things as they truly are. The minds of ordinary people, obscured by ignorance, are always attached to, especially attached to, and extremely ignorant of the objects of eye consciousness, which are purely conceptual. People deluded by craving become attached to themselves by conceptualizing their own desires. For example, a dog picks up a bone without meat and puts it in its mouth. When it puts the bone between its teeth, saliva flows out, and it licks the wetness. The dog, attached to that bone, bleeds between its teeth, but it thinks it is the taste of the bone, not realizing it is its own blood, and is tasting its own blood. The dog, craving the taste, even bites its own tongue. Craving the taste and thinking it is a bone is purely conceptual. Similarly, ordinary people become attached to pleasing forms in the realm of eye consciousness. That is like saliva, obscuring wisdom with conceptualization. Discrimination is like a bone. The eye is like putting it in the mouth, and licking it like that. That craving is like bleeding, thinking, "This is my form." Craving is like craving the taste of blood, craving that taste. Just like the dog, ordinary people are the same. Just like the bone, the forms of the realm of eye consciousness are the same. Just like the teeth chewing, conceptualization is the same. Just like the teeth, the object is the same. Therefore, the forms of the realm of eye consciousness, like bones, deceive all ordinary people. Furthermore, the monk thinks: If a monk who is weary of samsara is afraid of the fear of craving, he should completely abandon all desires. For example, a six-year-old elephant, surrounded by people who know the methods of taming elephants, has its huge body surrounded by wooden fences, bound by five bonds, and then provided with sugarcane, laddu (an Indian sweet), sugarcane wine, food, and drink.
