It is like that. External objects, sounds, touch, taste, colors, and various smells are like various paints. Samsara is like a wall. Knowledge is like appearance. Diligence and effort are like hands. The many forms created by the ripening of the fruits of karma are like the many forms, postures, shapes, colors, and riches of a painting. Furthermore, when a monk enters into meditation, he sees the mind as a painter in another way. For example, if the painter is pleased, the form of the paint, having been well prepared, becomes clear, and if he repeatedly draws with a brush, then, just as he draws a good image, if the mind, like a painter, is pleased, in the act of meditation, the form of meditation, like paint, having been completely prepared, becomes clear like paint, and if, like repeatedly drawing with a brush, the target is clearly hit, having been completely prepared, and he dwells equally below and above, and is not weary of rising, then the mind, like a painter, can draw a good image in the place of meditation. If he is displeased, the mind, like a painter, will take non-virtuous paints from the evil realms of sentient beings, hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, with a pestle-like brush of iron, and then, like a vessel, will draw the images of hells, animals, and hungry ghosts into bad animal realm images, and combine them extensively as before. Furthermore, the monk sees the mind as like a monkey. Just as a monkey is leaping, wandering without hindrance in trees, bamboo groves, flowers, fruits, rock crevices, and various different medicinal herb bushes, so too the mind, leaping like a monkey, also wanders in various different like the five realms of sentient beings, hells, hungry ghosts, and animals. Sentient beings are like trees. The bamboo grove of craving is like the many forms of bamboo groves. Discrimination is like the branches of flowers. Sounds, tastes, colors, smells, mountain gullies, crevices, and bad behaviors and

The unpleasant three realms are like a fruit. The body is like a hollow. The mind is like a monkey, wandering without obstruction in the realms of sentient beings, hells, hungry ghosts, animals, gods, and humans. The mind, like a monkey, wanders in the realm of samsara. Furthermore, when a monk enters meditation, he sees the mind as a dancer. Just as a dancer puts on attire, paints, stage, clothes, and various musical instruments, and the dancer dances, so too, this mind, like a dancer, puts on various costumes transformed by karma in various lands and realms of beings, and holds various causes and conditions, just like putting on various costumes. Actions are like various musical instruments. Samsara is like a dancer, just as one's own homeland is like the dancer's homeland. The dance itself makes the mind, like a dancer, dance various dances in the beginningless and endless samsara. Again, the monk sees the mind as a fish, like a fish in a river. Just as a fish changes in a mountain river, with turbulent waves, deep and rapid currents, difficult to endure, and the continuous flow can uproot many trees, and the powerful force of change is difficult to resist, producing and entering unbearable karma, so too, this mind, like a fish, the turbulent waves of the three existences are like change and turbulent waves. The deepest of the Avici hell is like the river of the desire realm, unfathomable. The continuation of the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds of all ordinary people, going to the other shore in unbearable states, is like an unbearable rapid current. The rapid current flowing in the river of the five destinies will lead beings to countless eons, which is unbearable, like the powerful force of the continuous flow of change. The force of change caused by impermanence itself is difficult to resist, just like being difficult to resist. In the river of samsara, the mind, like a fish, arises and enters, arising in gods and humans, and in sentient beings, hells, hungry ghosts, and animals, like the river of craving, the mind, like a fish, enters. Then there are others.
