Thus, non-manifesting form is considered unobstructed. If asked, what is this form like? It is the very nature of karma. Therefore, this form is also those eleven forms, and it is the basis of all virtuous dharmas. That monk, seeing that the forms of these sentient beings are different, their states are different, their names and realms of activity are different, and the aspects of their abodes are different, what is the reason? Thus, he sees that those sentient beings' minds are different, the aspects of their abodes and their inclinations are different, and the aspects of their karmas are different. Forms are different, states are different, names and realms of activity are different, and the aspects of their abodes are different. For example, a painter or a skilled student of a painter, seeing a pleasing, soft, and hard ground, sits down and, with various colors, draws various patterns, with beautiful shapes and various postures, depicting them as he pleases. Thus, this mind, like a painter or a student of a painter, with great interest, on the extremely soft and hard ground of the three realms, in the cyclical existence where the fruits of karma ripen, different states, different names and realms of activity, different appearances, and the sentient beings' aspects of different abodes, all are manifested and accomplished by the mind like a painter. Again, just as with white paint, one draws a white image, with red one draws a red image, with yellow one draws a yellow image, with dove-colored paint one draws a dove-colored image, and with black one draws a black image. Thus, this mind, like a painter, taking the white object of the mind as its near object, with the defilements of desire and other impurities that are accompanied by outflows, accomplishes the white dharma without afflictions, and the white images of gods and humans. The painter takes red paint and accomplishes the red images of gods and humans, and what is called red is that which is properly applied to the basis of the painting with sounds, tastes, tactile sensations, forms, and dense smells. Again, just as the mind is like a painter, taking yellow paint,

Animals are manifestly accomplished, and they are also under the influence of yellow. They drink each other's blood and eat each other's flesh, and they kill each other with attachment, hatred, and ignorance, which are like yellow paint. Moreover, the mind, like a painter, sees the aim of the color like the neck of a pigeon, and performs the defiled actions of a hungry ghost with the color like the neck of a pigeon. Their bodies are like burnt trees, and the mind, like a painter, focuses on stinginess, and is controlled by the obscuration of dimness of ignorance, and is hungry and thirsty. All kinds of suffering are completely overwhelmed. Moreover, the mind, like a painter, takes the nature of karma like black paint, and it is like drawing the black form of hell beings. Those beings are also born in a place surrounded by a burning black iron fence due to black karma. The black body becomes the basis of various kinds of diseases, harms, hunger and thirst, and the suffering of harm caused by one's own misdeeds and other incomparable sufferings makes them miserable. Furthermore, that monk who practices yoga abides in the five realms of samsara in the three realms, like the basis of a painting of five colors. The three realms are the realm of desire, the realm of form, and the realm of formlessness. There, the mind, like a painter, reveals desire and focuses on the realm of desire, thus depicting twenty different forms and colors. Those who are separated from the desire realm focus on the form realm and abide in it, and with the pen of the four meditations, they manifestly depict the form realm. Those who are separated from focusing on the form realm, like the mind of a painter, equally focus on the craving of the four samadhis, and thus manifestly depict the formless realm. This basis of the three realms is vast. Moreover, that monk sees the mind-painter of other beings in another way. There, the mind is like a painter, the body is like a container of paint, attachment, hatred, and ignorance are like firm actions, the object is like a frame, and the senses are like a brush.
