Just as one ties a pillar to make it usable and unchanging, so should it be done. Furthermore, the monk contemplates feelings with pleasing and highly relevant mental objects, whether they are virtuous, non-virtuous, predictable, or unpredictable. If those feelings cause the mind to change, he ties it to the pillar of that object with the rope of faith, making it usable and unchanging. The monk who contemplates the feelings present in the six sense bases of the body enters the fifth stage by seeing the arising and cessation of correct feelings. He discerns with the lamp of knowledge the feelings that arise from the contact of the eye aggregate, contemplating what these feelings are that are being experienced. This feeling of mental consciousness is dependently originated, and he sees it as highly connected to the mind. All ordinary beings are robbed by mental discrimination and burned by the fire of extreme discrimination. There is no feeler or doer here, only the aggregate of formations arising in connection with causes and conditions, and this aggregate of formations ceases. By seeing and following the feelings that arise from the contact of the eye aggregate as they are, the mind is not robbed, does not waver, does not become faulty, and does not become defiled. Furthermore, the monk contemplates the feeling of the ear, thinking, "What is this feeling that is being experienced and known?" He sees that this feeling of the ear is highly connected to mental consciousness and merely abides in that which is highly connected to the mind. There is no doer or feeler here, and the feeling of the ear is dependently originated, without a doer or feeler. This empty aggregate of formations arises and ceases by the power of causes and conditions. Furthermore, the monk contemplates the feeling of the nose, thinking, "What is this feeling that is being experienced and known?" He sees that the feeling is highly connected to mental consciousness, and abiding in that object, it arises from causes and conditions and is the nature of experiencing. This empty aggregate of formations is...

He thinks that it is not made by the maker, nor made by the feeler, but it happens continuously. When he understands the feeling of the nose, he thinks that there is no maker and no feeler, and there is nothing to hinder it. Furthermore, that monk discerns the feeling of the tongue, and he thinks: What is this feeling of the tongue, what is it experiencing and cognizing? He sees that this feeling of the tongue is closely related to consciousness, it depends on consciousness, is related to consciousness, takes consciousness as its object, arises from the cause of consciousness, and depends on it. He thinks that there is no maker, no feeler, and nothing to hinder it here, but it arises due to the cause and condition of the aggregate of formations. Furthermore, that monk contemplates the tactile sensation of the body, and he thinks: What is this feeling of the body, what is it experiencing and cognizing? He sees that this feeling of the body is closely related to consciousness, and he thinks that there is no maker or feeler to hinder it here, but this empty aggregate of formations operates under the influence of cause and condition. Furthermore, that monk discerns the feeling of the mind, and he thinks: What is this feeling of the mind, what is it experiencing and cognizing? He sees that consciousness arises depending on mind and dharma. The contact of the three assembled things, and the feeling that arises together with the contact. For example, a good fragrance arises from the combination of many fragrant substances. Just as there is not a single substance that is not the cause of that fragrance, all feelings arise from the aggregation of causes and conditions. It is not made by the maker, nor made by the feeler. For example, depending on the leaves, also depending on the calyx, also depending on the stem, also depending on the pollen, a flower called lotus arises, and there is not a single thing that is not the cause of the lotus. Similarly, depending on the object, also depending on the space, also depending on the attention, also depending on the appearance, the feeling arising from the aggregation and contact of the eye arises. The feeling arising from the eye, depending on the eye, is not of the same kind, not of the same substance, not of the same element, not constantly existing, but like an illusion. He thinks, what is this like?
