also manifested to them. They also manifested to the lord of the gods, Indra. Indra also manifested to the gods of No-Contention. If in Jambudvipa, there is a son of a certain family in a certain country, a son of a certain family in a certain village, a son of a certain family of a certain lineage, a son of a family named so-and-so, who shaves his hair and beard, puts on the kasaya robe, and with faith goes forth from home to homelessness, then through effort and diligence, he gradually enters the vast and correct perception of the fourth dhyana, causing the power of Mara to decline and the true Dharma to flourish, I think I should manifest him to the gods. When Indra, riding on the elephant king, the son of Earth Protector, was seen by the gods of No-Contention, they rejoiced and said to Indra: Indra, whoever in Jambudvipa possesses the human Dharma and follows the true Dharma is in accordance with your true Dharma. Furthermore, how does that bhikshu understand the feeling of abandoning and completely abandoning the bonds of Mara? The yogi who abides in the inner Dharma, following the Dharma, through the wisdom gained from hearing or through the divine eye, the bhikshu thus distinguishes the correct perception: when the unwholesome object of eye consciousness arises, it ceases with the second wholesome object. When wholesome arises, it ceases with the unindicated object, the indicated ceases and the unindicated arises. Similarly, one separately experiences the feeling arising from ear contact, the feeling arising from nose contact, the feeling arising from tongue contact, the feeling arising from body and mind contact. When experiencing separately, the wholesome dharmas become complete and his afflictions are lessened. When meditating in this way, one knows those subtle feelings separately. He sees the feeling of Dharma ceasing together, just as the light of a lamp is extinguished by the light of the sun, the two feelings cease together. Furthermore, one separately experiences the increasing wholesome and unwholesome feelings, like the light of a lamp.

Just as one illuminates with the light of a second lamp. Furthermore, one thoroughly distinguishes feelings. Thinking: Which feeling, and which other feeling's feeling, will forever be incompatible? Thus, one sees that wholesome feelings and unwholesome feelings are forever incompatible. For example, just as the light of a lamp and the light of a star are incompatible. Furthermore, that monk thoroughly distinguishes: Which feeling is completely eliminated by which feeling? He sees that the feeling aimed at the unpolluted completely eliminates the feeling aimed at the polluted. For example, just as the light of fire melts snow. Which feeling is harmed by which feeling? Then he further expands on this. When he sees that unpleasant feelings are overwhelmed by pleasant feelings, he further expands on it. For example, just as the sun overwhelms the light of the moon during the day, and that light of the moon also increases at night. Then, that monk further thoroughly distinguishes feelings. Thinking: Will those who possess many feelings be overwhelmed by the single-pointed feeling of mindfulness? He sees that many worldly feelings are overwhelmed by the transcendent, unpolluted feeling. For example, just as the light of many stars, planets, and constellations at night is overwhelmed by the light of a single moon. Furthermore, that monk contemplates the very subtle feeling that follows feelings. What are the many polluted feelings that arise from the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body? How does one initiate virtue? He sees that the many worldly, polluted feelings are also overcome by the unpolluted appearance. For example, just as the light of stars, planets, and constellations at night is overcome by the presence of the moon's appearance. Then, that monk also contemplates that feeling: How long will my other feelings last? He sees that in an instant, my other feelings arise, perish, and remain. For example, like lightning. Furthermore,

The monk thus thoroughly distinguishes, thinking: "Could the feeling of the eye become a cause for the feeling of the nose?" He sees with the same mind the objective feelings of different faculties, that is, he sees all those faculties. For example, one cow does not become a cause for different kinds such as horses, mules, donkeys, and buffaloes. Similarly, from beginningless time, the differences in objects aroused by the five faculties, the objects of different faculties, do not become one. For example: like cows, horses, mules, donkeys, buffaloes, and pigs. Thus, the monk who follows the feelings will generate very subtle wisdom, and he will always rely on, meditate on, and increase that wisdom. When he always relies on it, he follows the feelings, follows the cessation and destruction, and then thinks: "Where do the feelings aroused by my eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind come from, and where do they go? When they cease, where do they go, etc.?" The monk follows the cessation and destruction of feelings, and when he thinks well, he thinks about the nature of the path in this way: "The feeling of the eye does not arise or come from anywhere, and when it ceases, it does not go anywhere, etc. The feeling of the eye arises from not having arisen, and after arising, it will also separate. Feeling arises from the source of the eye, just as water arises from the bottom of the ocean. When it ceases, it does not go anywhere, etc., just as a river flows and merges into the ocean. The feeling of the eye arises from not having arisen, and after arising, it will also perish separately." The feelings of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind are all dependently arisen. For example, a potter or a skilled disciple of a potter relies on the wheel, also relies on the clay, also relies on labor, and also relies on water, and thus relies on the cause—clay—to produce a pot. That pot does not come from any source, and when it is destroyed, it does not go anywhere, etc., but just as a pot arises from causes and conditions. Also relying on the eye, form
