Let this be printed. When he entered that third ground, the earth-protecting Yaksha was very happy and proclaimed to the Yakshas who roam in the sky. They also proclaimed to the Four Great Kings. They also proclaimed to the gods of the Four Great Kings. They also proclaimed to Śakra, the lord of the gods: 'In Jambudvīpa, a son of such and such a family has shaved his hair and beard, and with faith has gone forth from home into homelessness. In such and such a place and such and such a city, a son of such and such a family, named so and so, has shaved his hair and beard, and with faith has gone forth from home into homelessness, and he has entered the third ground, wanting to wage war with the Maras, making the side of the Maras decline and making the side of the sacred Dharma flourish.' Śakra, the lord of the gods, heard this and was very happy, and riding on the elephant, the son of Earth-Protection, surrounded by a host of gods with great magical powers, proclaimed to the gods of the Free-from-Strife: 'In Jambudvīpa, a son of such and such a family...' up to '...has entered the third ground, wanting to wage war with the Maras, making the side of the Maras decline and making the side of the sacred Dharma flourish.' Having heard this from Śakra, the lord of the gods, the gods of the Free-from-Strife became very happy. Then, that bhikṣu thought: 'How does one enter the fourth ground from the third ground?' Then, the yogin, abiding in the inner Dharma, observing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, having investigated with the wisdom born of hearing or with the divine eye, when he enters the fourth ground, because of the condition of contact, he will experience happiness, and because of the cause of happiness, the basis of happiness, and the condition of happiness, my feeling arises. When it ceases, is pacified, and disappears inwardly, immediately because of the contact of suffering, the basis of suffering, the arising of suffering, and suffering itself, my feeling of suffering arises. Likewise, because of the condition of equanimity and the condition of contact, various feelings manifest separately.

Know this. Moment by moment, the companion of my tactile sensation and the arising of touch occur. He neither delights in nor clings to that pleasant sensation, nor does he particularly rejoice in or increase that sensation, nor does he enjoy it. Similarly, the painful sensation neither harms nor particularly torments, nor does it cause disturbance. He abides in equanimity, and if he possesses mindfulness and awareness, then if these three sensations exist, the mind will forever be free from desire. Or it will transform into another special equanimity, becoming completely pure and thoroughly purified. He thinks thus: Alas, I should perfect this equanimity of the sphere of infinite space, which is so completely pure and so thoroughly purified, and make it compatible with my mind. I should manifest the ultimate and connection of my equanimity, and especially abide in it. I should perfect and abide in that which is encompassed by the equanimity of the sphere of infinite space. I should perfect and abide in the equanimity of the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, which are so completely pure and so thoroughly purified. He perfects the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and abides, making his mind compatible with that (state), abiding and dwelling in that equanimity, particularly clinging to that (state), and drawing near to it. I think I should perfect and abide in the equanimity of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. For example, a goldsmith or a skilled apprentice of a goldsmith puts gold into a charcoal furnace. After putting it in, he holds it with tongs and blows air with bellows, blowing everywhere. That gold that has been well worked is virtuous and auspicious, has a good color, all the workers praise it, the good color is praised, it is used in accordance everywhere, it is free from impurities, and there are no remaining flaws, it is tamed and auspicious, and it even overwhelms the light of jewels. That goldsmith or goldsmith
