A monk, with mindfulness, observes how his own body exists, thereby knowing that this body has the earth element, water element, fire element, wind element, space element, and consciousness element, and is able to truly distinguish them. What is the earth element? There are two kinds of earth element: the internal earth element and the external earth element. What is the internal earth element? It is all that is minute, internal, and individually internal in this body, that is contained and held. What is contained is what is gathered by the skin and flesh, etc.; what is held is what is gathered by the hair, body hair, nails, and teeth. The forms of hardness and roughness are what are contained and held. What are they? For example: hair, body hair, nails, teeth, sweat, one's own flesh, bones, veins, tendons, heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, spleen, saliva, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, feces, food, food residue, marrow, and meninges, etc. Furthermore, all that is internal and individually internal in this body, the forms of hardness and roughness, that are contained and held, this is called the internal earth element. What is the external earth element? It is all that is minute, hard, and rough in form externally, that is not contained and not held, this is called the external earth element. Therefore, all the earth elements combined together are merely an element, not determined by feeling, nor determined by volition. Knowing that the earth element is not permanent, not pleasurable, not pure, and not clinging to it, for the monk, the great faith that arises from the blessing of wisdom will lead him to think: 'All these are not mine, I am not these, these are not me and mine.' Having truly known these with correct wisdom, for the monk, his mind will be free from attachment to the earth element. Therefore, the monk will develop great faith in the blessing of wisdom. What is the water element? There are also two kinds of water element: the internal water element and the external water element. What is the internal water element? It is all that is minute in this body, that has the nature of water and the properties of water. The water element is the minute particle that has the essence of moisture in the body.

Me, saliva, snot, brain fluid, blood, fat, pus, oil, marrow, bile, urine, and brain growths, etc. Furthermore, for this body, within each individual part, whatever small amount of water and the form of water is grasped and occupied, this is called the internal water element. What is external? Whatever small amount of external water and the form of water is moist, the form of moisture, ungrasped and unoccupied, this is called the external water element. So, whatever is the internal water element and whatever is the external water element, those elements combined together, this is merely an element. All these are not me. Those are not me. Those are not me and mine. Having correctly seen the water element, the mind will become free from desire towards the water element. Thus, the monk enters into the blessing of wisdom. So, what is the fire element? The fire element is also of two kinds: that which exists internally and that which exists externally. So, the internal fire element is, for this body, whatever small amount exists internally and, within each individual part, the fire and the form of fire that is grasped and occupied. What are those? For example, whatever makes one feel hot, whatever completely burns, whatever ignites, and whatever is eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted becomes well and comfortably digested, and furthermore, for this body, the internal and, within each individual part, the fire and the form of fire that is grasped and occupied, this is called the internal fire element. So, what is the external fire element? The external, whatever small amount of fire and, the form of fire, and warmth and the form of warmth, ungrasped and unoccupied, this is called the external fire element. So, whatever is the internal fire element and whatever is the external fire element, those elements combined together, this is merely an element. All those are not me. Those are not me. Those are not me and mine. In this way, having truly seen those with correct wisdom as they are, the mind will become free from desire towards the fire element. Even if it is not a place created by the maker, the fire element fully enters. So, what is the wind element? The wind element is also of two kinds: that which exists internally and that which exists externally.
