Having renounced the household and gone forth, they uphold the precepts, truly practice discipline, possess fearlessness, wisdom, and liberation, abide in mindfulness, regard even the slightest transgression as dreadful, diminish the power of Mara, and make the power of the sacred Dharma manifest. This is what we beseech the gods. Having heard this, the lord of the gods, Indra, is exceedingly pleased, and the leader before Indra and the thirty-three gods all become joyful. The chapter on the path of the ten virtuous actions is concluded. The Noble Sacred Dharma of Mindfulness, Volume Three. Thereafter, other monks who gradually abandon defilements, initially abandoning non-virtuous dharmas, thinking, 'How should I cultivate virtuous dharmas?' The yogi, abiding in the Dharma of the inner mind, following the Dharma, through the wisdom arising from hearing or observing with the divine eye, the monk initially, with these objects and faculties mutually becoming causes and conditions, all beings from beginningless time enter into samsara and wander completely, those very ones become the cause of birth, discriminating in the ocean of objects, thinking, 'These beings wander because of the inner mind and objects.' For a while, initially, they become accustomed to delighting in such solitude, in order to tame the mind like a monkey, they become accustomed to it in monasteries, gardens, sangharamas, in the midst of grass, under trees, and in solitary cemeteries, making the mind that delights in solitude exceedingly pure. They do not delight in laughter, coquetry, or play in cities, nor do they look at the women of others, nor do they delight in commotion. The two enemies of pure conduct are commotion and prostitution. Having abandoned these two, they first love and purify their mind, focusing on one object, they initially correctly discriminate and think about how to gather and hold this mind. Initially, in this way, with the eighteen mental investigations, they cause the mind to engage in virtue, non-virtue, and the unstated.

That's what I think. What are the eighteen? It's like this: when the eye sees an object and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness, which is experienced individually and thoroughly understood. Becoming an unpleasant place is being free from desire, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. Likewise, when the ear hears a sound and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness. Becoming an unpleasant place is focusing on purity, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. Similarly, when the nose smells an odor and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness. Becoming an unpleasant place is purity, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. Similarly, when the tongue tastes a flavor and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness. Becoming an unpleasant place is purity, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. Similarly, when the body touches a tangible object and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness. Becoming an unpleasant place is purity, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. Similarly, when the mind knows a dharma and it becomes a pleasant place, it is the maturation of all-around afflictions and unwholesomeness. Becoming an unpleasant place is purity, which is the maturation of goodness. Becoming a neutral place is the maturation of the undeclared. In this way, the maturation of the eighteen kinds of mental discernment leads to death and birth in samsara.

That's what I thought. When the monk sees those eighteen observations of the mind, the Yakshas who dwell in the sky are all very happy, and they proclaim to the Yakshas on the earth. The Yakshas who dwell in the sky and on the earth are very happy in their hearts, and they proclaim to the Four Great Kings. Those Four Great Kings proclaim to the gods of the Four Great Kings: In Jambudvipa, in a certain big city, a certain town, a certain place, in a certain lineage, a son of a certain lineage shaves his hair and beard, puts on the robes, and with faith goes forth from home to homelessness. He thoroughly contemplates and manifests those eighteen observations of the mind, and he greatly enjoys solitude, and is one who practices in one place. When the gods of the Four Great Kings hear this, they think that the power of Mara will weaken, and the power of the Dharma will increase significantly, so they are all very happy. The gods of the Four Great Kings say to Indra, the lord of the gods: O god, in Jambudvipa, in a certain lineage... a son of a certain lineage shaves his hair and beard, puts on the robes, and with faith goes forth from home to homelessness. He enjoys the place from solitude to the cemetery, thoroughly contemplates and manifests the eighteen observations of the mind, and approaches and dwells there. When Indra hears this from the gods of the Four Great Kings, he sees that his heart is very happy. Then, that monk thoroughly sees the eighteen observations of the mind, and thinks: Besides desire, what other ground can be contemplated? Then, the yogi abides in the inner Dharma, and follows the Dharma. He observes with the wisdom born of hearing or with the divine eye, and sees the four blessings of the noble ones, namely: the blessing of wisdom, the blessing of truth, the blessing of generosity, and the blessing of near peace. How does the monk see the blessing of wisdom? Here, the monk is
