Knowing the maturation of karma, one examines the world of the pretas. With the wisdom born of hearing, one sees how the pretas reside in the land of the pretas, in the charnel ground. Thinking, "Who will be born there from this?" one examines with the wisdom born of hearing. Those beings who are overcome by miserliness, who steal the flowers offered to the Buddha by others, and who sell them for profit after stealing them, will fall into the lower realms after death, tormented by hunger and thirst, and will be born among those residing in the charnel ground of the pretas. The food of those residing in the charnel ground is as follows: any broom from the charnel ground, without smoke, they eat that and dwell for a month. After that, they are without food. Always, their heads are bound by a blazing iron chain, which intensely burns the marrow from which they were born, and also burns the skull. A second iron chain also binds their throats, and it burns their throats and chests. Because of the cause of stealing the Buddha's flowers, those fires go into all the limbs and minor limbs and burn them. The body is also infested with worms and tormented by unbearable suffering, and another rakshasa comes to the charnel ground, and he also grinds them all into powder with hammers, swords, and pestles. They utter cries and lamentations, tormented by three sufferings: the suffering of hunger and thirst, the suffering of the iron chain, and the suffering of being struck by others with swords and hammers. Thus, they experience and do evil, which separates them, and when they utter lamentations, they speak in verses as follows: The suffering of hunger and thirst, the second suffering of fire arises, the third suffering of hammer and sword, that I experience. One's own mind and karma, here deceive and completely bewilder, having been born in the place of the pretas, one will be separated from friends and relatives. When led by the rope of powerless karmas, friends, sons, and wives, and roots.

Also does not protect. As is one's karma, there is no other savior. Three aspects, I have experienced. Giving, discipline, listening, and others. Three aspects are completely proclaimed. Obscured by the net of delusion, What evil deeds have I not done? Becoming the cause of displeasure, The fruits of those karmas will come. Extremely unpleasant, the realm of hungry ghosts. If I am liberated from sinful deeds, Again and again, sinful deeds, I should never do. Thus, the hungry ghosts utter lamentations, until they have individually and accurately experienced the sinful deeds they have done and accumulated, destroyed, abandoned, and not exhausted them, they will be harmed by great suffering and regret in their minds. Afterwards, they will be liberated from the world of hungry ghosts, and after liberation, if they experience the karma of experiencing equally with humans in other times, and are born among humans equally with humans, in accordance with that karma and cause, they will be seen as fierce and living on graveyard clothes. After that, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, observes the world of hungry ghosts, and with the wisdom arising from hearing, sees how one called dwelling in the hungry ghost tree dwells in the realm of hungry ghosts. Thinking about what causes them to be born there, he observes with the wisdom arising from hearing, whoever with stinginess causes the trees of livelihood of the Sangha, as well as the ponds and wells made for the livelihood of all beings who are hungry, thirsty, and physically tired, to decline, or desiring dead wood, thinks like this: These are my trees, and cuts them down, and if he does so, then after leaving his body, he falls into the evil realms and falls into the hungry ghost tree. After being born there, also because of his karma, being born in the tree, he is harmed by extreme cold and heat, just as a worm born in dead wood is harmed from all sides. The one who is extremely distressed and weakened, if he dissipates that suffering a hundredfold, then in the dead wood, he is eaten by worms such as Markotaka and Ashodara, and his
