In those intermediate places, scorched by the sun's heat, those desiring protection, seeking refuge, and wanting support run and cry out for water and food. Due to the sins of those karmas, they see something in the far distance that looks like water and mist, like a thirsty marmot. Seeing that, thinking they have found water, they run. With hopeful minds, they don't even count the fatigue. The more they run like that, the more that thing disappears in essence, like a thirsty marmot; how could they ever obtain it? Due to the suffering of exhaustion, the tips of Darbha grass pierce their heels, causing them to fall, suffer, and some even meet their death. Then, again, due to the remainder of their karma, they are revived. Thus, their bodies are afflicted tenfold by hunger and thirst. Hundreds of crows, owls, and vultures greedily peck and devour their bodies and eyes, piercing them until they reach the bones. Those without protectors, without support, suffer intensely from threefold suffering. They approach each other and utter such lamentations: 'From all the crows and owls, fiercely tormented by the sharp beaks of the great Vajra Garuda, without refuge, we cannot see comfort.' 'How I destroyed the guest, that karma dwells nearby. This is like a reflection; similarly, the result has come here.' 'Bound by the noose of karma, harmed by the whip of karma. Until karma is exhausted, no support is seen.' 'Beings are led by karma, completely guided by karma. Wherever karma ripens, there they are cast by karma.' 'In three places, they are cast by karma, constantly wandering like a wheel. Therefore, one should do good and always abandon unhelpful sins. Those unwanted sins should be seen as fire. Tormented by the fire of hunger and thirst, that leads to the realm of the pretas (hungry ghosts). The suffering of thirst arises, increasing again and again. I am consumed by the spreading garland of fire, becoming like a burning mountain. A mountain ablaze with fire, the flow of a river can extinguish everything,'

By my fire. This cannot be killed. After the dry wood of karma has arisen, The wind of craving has become a companion, I am completely surrounded on all sides, And intensely burned by the fire of karma. The water of discipline, diligence, and wisdom, Having well grasped the vessel of generosity, The fire of karma that follows the three realms, The great being destroys it. Those who are dominated by karma, And completely transformed by the three karmas, By the three themselves, ignorance is removed, They wander in the three places. Thirty-six kinds of karmic power, Having gone to forty and wandering in various ways, Those who have not conquered ninety-eight, They will go to the three realms. Those who know one hundred and eight, And contemplate the meaning of twelve, Whatever distinguishes dharma and non-dharma, They will have endless happiness. Distinguishing the two characteristics, Those who fully know the two eights, Whoever understands the sixteen births, That person is burned by sins. The stable view of the two paths, And having completely perfected all the grounds, Liberated from the four rivers, That wise one burns sins. Knowing how to enter those eight paths, And seeing the ten powers, Knowing the cause of the two sufferings, One goes to the place without exhaustion. Those who have gone beyond the two truths, And analyze the four mindfulnesses, Steadfastly contemplating the meaning of the three times, They do not go under the power of Mara. Having completely abandoned the white dharmas, And being deluded by the fruit of one's own karma, By the sinful karma of myself, I have gone to this world of pretas. Thus, among those pretas, some, having previously done a little virtuous deed, their wisdom becomes very sharp. To those pretas who have become the object of focus, they are taught in this way. After teaching, as long as their sinful deeds done and accumulated have not been destroyed, abandoned, and exhausted, they will each experience their own suffering. Afterwards, they will be liberated from that world of pretas. Even after liberation, if, due to other karma to be experienced in other lifetimes, they are born as humans with a fate similar to that of humans, then, due to having a common cause with that karma, they will exhibit the behavior of pretas and follow the habits of pretas. From then on, O Bhikshu, karma...
