Even if done, they will not live. Here is a verse: Actions of evil deeds, are said to be the result of evil deeds. Likewise, the fruit of good deeds, is seen as ripening into happiness. With the long rope of karma, the children are tightly bound. They will not go to the supreme city of Nirvana, it is difficult to be liberated. Having cut it with the sword of wisdom, it does not enter anywhere, and is certainly free from the plague of samsara, the holy one goes to Nirvana. Just as fish are caught with a net, they can be easily taken out. Likewise, sentient beings bound by craving, are drawn near by the Lord of Death. The wild deer struck by a poisoned arrow, wherever it goes, the poison goes with it, likewise, the poison of humans is craving. Those who follow the path, please abandon craving like poison. Just as dry wood is burned by fire, it burns the children. Rejoicing for a while is difficult to know, the ripening is like fire. If you want happiness, be free from that craving. Just as a fish caught by a hook, goes under the power of death. Likewise, people caught by craving, go under the power of pretas. In the realm of pretas, those suffering pretas run everywhere. In hell, the sentient beings of hell, are driven by great craving. Whoever is without afflictions and wealth, and lives by the kindness of others, the Buddha said that ordinary person is driven by craving. Thus, that monk, having examined that stinginess like poison drives everything, again becomes disgusted with samsara. Then again, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, contemplates the world of pretas. With the wisdom arising from hearing, he sees how the preta called essence-eater exists in the realm of pretas. He wonders, what causes them to be born there? Then he examines with the wisdom arising from hearing, and finds that the enemy disguised as a friend, the two-faced one, deceives them with sweet words, saying: 'Go and fight, and I will protect you as I protect myself.' Having been completely deceived in this way, they generate glory and power. Having arisen, they enter the battle, completely abandoning...

If he seizes it, he thinks that he will offer all his wealth to the king and take possession of it. If he kills the one who has not deceived him, then the deceiver will die, fall into a bad rebirth, and be born among the essence-eating pretas. He will be extremely tormented by hunger and thirst, his body will be constantly cut by weapons, and his skin, flesh, and bones will be destroyed. When the weapons fall, he will flee in the direction of the falling weapons. When he flees elsewhere, if that unclean person does not circumambulate the stupa, that preta will find an opportunity and steal his glory. He may live for ten or twenty years, but he will suffer greatly until his sinful deeds that he has done and accumulated, and the karma that is perfectly in accordance with the preparation of karma, the essence of karma, and the conclusion of karma are destroyed, abandoned, and not exhausted, he will enjoy the fruits of his own karma, eating what he has done, and the cycle of rebirth from his own karma will be very long. He will later be liberated from that preta world.

It transforms. Thus, it wanders around in the form of a human, harming sentient beings. It dwells in secluded places such as crossroads or intersections. After dwelling there, it watches for opportunities to harm people. Mostly, it transforms into the likeness of a Brahmin, then becomes invisible and harms people again. Those who have knowledge of pretas say, "Look, that one is possessed by a demon." That is what worldly people say. Thus, it is connected with sin, and the body of the evildoer is tormented by hunger and thirst. Thus, as long as that Brahma demon has not destroyed, abandoned, and exhausted the sinful deeds it has done and accumulated, and as long as it is filled with jealousy and miserliness, it will remain in that realm of pretas. It will later be liberated from that world of pretas. After being liberated, if it is born as a human due to karma that must be experienced in another lifetime, then, in accordance with that karma and its cause, it may eat people, or it may be seen as a dakini drinking human blood. Then, again, a bhikshu who knows the ripening of the fruits of karma examines the world of pretas. With the knowledge that comes from hearing, he sees how there exists in the realm of pretas a preta called "the fire-pit-eating preta." Thinking, "What causes beings to be born there?" he examines it with the knowledge that comes from hearing. If someone is corrupted by jealousy and miserliness, pretends to be a virtuous friend, and then eats the food and drink of the sangha, then, when that one separates from the body, he will fall into a bad rebirth and be born in the hell of sentient beings. Then, after dying, he will be born among those fire-pit-eating pretas. Having been born there, the body is like a burnt tree, tormented by hunger and thirst, completely deluded by his own karma, wandering alone everywhere. The sustenance of his life becomes like this: when another falls into the fire, he becomes half-burnt, and then he eats them like fire, like a rain of fire. He is like that fire pit, tormented by hunger and thirst, and is also burned twice as much by that fire. When he is burned, he will certainly experience the power of the karma of those non-virtuous deeds that he has done and accumulated, and he will utter cries of weeping.
