When that person observes the world of the pretas, he obtains the knowledge arising from hearing, called the method of pretas eating incense, and sees how they obtain life. He wonders, 'Who will be born there?' He observes with the knowledge arising from hearing, like this, with great greed, overwhelmed by miserliness, not understanding the result of karma, thinking that this field called 'Buddha' is not a field of merit, not understanding it as a field of merit, leaving the good incense and taking the bad incense, without joy in his heart, and without faith, yet wanting to truly experience the result of karma, offering incense in this way in front of others, thinking that this will become the result of my karma, that person, after death, falls into the evil realms, becoming a yaksha with great magical powers who delights in garlands of flowers, powders, unguents, incense, and the sounds of musical instruments, becoming a yaksha who eats incense. The dwelling places of the yakshas are at crossroads, four-way intersections, highways, streets, temples, monasteries, gardens, houses, cities, or places like Pusu, intoxicated by the burning of black agarwood incense, and worshipped by all people, this is not the merit of mind and matter, but the merit of a good field. Even if one offers something small to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, it will become a great result. For example, when a small seed of the banyan tree is planted in fertile soil, that tree will become a large tree with good branches and a great collection of leaves. Similarly, the result of offering to the good field—the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—will also become great through the merit of the field. Thus, that preta with great magical powers experiences happiness, and when his karma is exhausted, he is liberated from the world of the pretas, and after liberation, he wanders in samsara just as karma and cause are in harmony, and karma is close. If, like a turtle's head entering the hole of a yoke, he shares a common destiny with people and is reborn as a human, then he is always born into a poor caste, and always anoints his body with garlands of flowers, powders, and unguents, seeing that his body becomes very fragrant.

O. Then, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, contemplated the world of the pretas. With the wisdom born of hearing, he saw how the pretas called "Violent Practitioners" existed. He wondered, "Which beings will be born there?" He contemplated with the wisdom born of hearing, and saw that wicked people, overcome by stinginess, though holding the appearance of ascetics, with broken vows, falsely accuse other ascetics, saying, "A certain ascetic is afflicted with a terrible disease, please, patron, give the means for healing the illness." He takes the means and consumes them himself. That person, with evil deeds, assumes various guises, runs from place to place, and deceives patrons. When that person departs from the body, he falls into the evil realms, and is born among the pretas who are Violent Practitioners. Having been born there, he will eat filthy and impure food. He will always be tormented by hunger and thirst. He will despise whatever is impure, and will be without pride. As soon as he finds an opportunity, he will show terrifying visions in the dreams of others, and will rejoice in cemeteries. His body and all his hair will blaze, and he will rejoice greatly at the time of the destruction of a country. He will entice others with violent mantras and harm them. In an instant, he can entice and bring people from hundreds and thousands of leagues away. Thus, that violent preta obtains the name of yaksha. Ordinary people think that this yaksha has great magical powers and is a powerful yaksha, and they make offerings to him. Thus, he harms and injures various kinds of beings, and lives as long as his life is not exhausted. Afterwards, he will die from there, and after dying, because it is in accordance with the cause of karma, he will wander completely in samsara, acting according to his own karma. If he is fortunate enough to be born as a human being with the same fate as humans among a hundred people, he will be seen as one who raises terrible demons and yakshas. Then, the monk, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, again contemplated the world of the pretas.
