If one engages in the business of selling alcohol, being completely ruined by stinginess and jealousy, deceiving those who drink alcohol by adulterating it with water, engaging in various harms, not giving charity, not doing merit, not guarding morality, not listening to the Dharma, not practicing the Dharma, placing other things in places where one should not be attached, and rejoicing in them, doing these things with karma, the accumulation of karma, and the consequences of karma, then, having committed these wrongdoings, upon leaving the body, one will fall into the lower realms and be reborn among those hungry ghosts who drink water. The body is always tormented by hunger and thirst, wandering everywhere in places without water, rocky mountains, wildernesses, and great monasteries. The color is like a bee and coal, and all limbs are hard and rough, extremely protruding. The body is covered by burning, the face is covered by long hair, and constantly tormented by the fire arising from hunger and thirst, if occasionally one approaches water in a hundred times, when one wants to cross the water, no water spray will appear from the feet. Those who practice the Dharma, scattering water with their hands at the water's edge, saying that they will give it to those who are thirsty, will obtain life. If one desires not to give, sitting by the water's edge and drinking, then the hungry ghosts who guard the water stream will clearly inflict harm, and the body will become as if it has been cut. Tormented by suffering, one will again utter cries, wail, and run everywhere. Deceived by sinful karma, as long as the sinful karma that one has done and accumulated has not been destroyed, abandoned, and exhausted, one will experience suffering there. Afterwards, one will be liberated from the world of hungry ghosts, and after liberation, one will also wander in samsara, wandering like one's own karmic wind, due to causes in accordance with karma. If in a hundred times, like a turtle entering the yoke hole, one is born as a human being with a shared destiny with people, then one will be born in places far from water, ponds, and forests, born in rocky mountains, wildernesses, and bad villages. Always

They will drink water from foul-smelling ditches. They will also be afflicted by gallbladder disease. I saw that they would be harmed by endless thirst day and night. Then, the monk who understood the ripening of karmic results contemplated the world of pretas. With the wisdom born of hearing, he saw a place in the world of pretas called "Display of All Pretas." Wondering from where they would be born there, he investigated with the wisdom born of hearing. Evil people overcome by envy and stinginess, craving for unreasonable things, those greedy ones who give a jumbled, unequal reward, not based on value, to poor scholars who maintain their livelihood with great difficulty, and who are always happy to deceive them. They also induce others to do evil deeds, settling and arranging them to do these things, but they do not give charity. They do not make merit, do not abide by moral conduct, do not approach with faith, do not practice dharma-compliant behavior, are not upright or gentle, do not act as virtuous friends, and are repeatedly overcome by envy and stinginess. When such people depart from their bodies, they will fall into evil destinies and be born among the "Display of All Pretas." Those in the world call them "father." They are always tormented by hunger and thirst, their bodies are like scorched trees, and they are weakened by the absence of joy. Tears cover their faces, and their hands and feet are severely cracked. Their hair covers their faces like darkness. The color of their bellies is like dark clouds, and they emit cries. When they groan, they wail like this: Without giving, how can one obtain the chance to see? Without planting, how can fruit arise? Like no light without a lamp. Without giving, how can there be happiness? Just as a limbed but blind person's eyes cannot see. Those without generosity are like that, they cannot find the happiness of pretas. The world of pretas, what kind of pretas? Like those without wealth, in the midst of three fears. Wandering around very unhappily. That is the fruit of stinginess. Beings who eat the fruit of their own karma, enjoying the results of their actions. Without giving, people obtain nothing. Efforts made are not wasted. Those who dwell in the world of pretas, we are bound by evil deeds.

Burning! The fire born of hunger and thirst completely consumes here. When will we be free from thirst and attain happiness? When will we be completely liberated from utter torment? Not knowing the path and the non-path, nor knowing the fruits of karma. Not knowing the fire born of hunger and thirst, not knowing the arising of heat. The face is covered by hair like darkness, without hope, abandoning lives. The skin is connected by a network of tendons, my living cry is suffering! Those with bodies trapped in secluded places, are always and everywhere in suffering, here there is no protector, we have fallen into suffering. Thus, all those who show themselves as pretas utter cries. They wail and lament, wandering everywhere. If they run around again, the monk sees them and thinks: Alas, how fiercely the realm of desire burns! If a faithful person gives to those who run around like that, and if they are born of that kind, then that will arise, and they will obtain the sustenance of life from it, and that is the protector, that is the refuge, that is the support. Thus, until that sinful deed is destroyed, abandoned, and not exhausted, they will live. Afterwards, they will be liberated from that preta world, and after liberation, they will also share the cause with that karma, experiencing the fruits of their own karma, driven by the wind of their own karma. If they are born among humans again, like a turtle entering a yoke hole, sharing equally with humans, then they will be seen beating clay drums, or ringing bells, or becoming guardians of temples. Then again, the monk, knowing the ripening of karmic fruits, if he examines the preta world, then with the wisdom born of hearing, he sees how the pretas called spit-eating pretas exist in the preta world. Thinking about where they will be born from, he examines with the wisdom born of hearing, like this, an evil person is reborn, or a woman overwhelmed by jealousy and stinginess, the image of the Sangha or other wise people, and so on.
