This is one aspect of the hungry ghosts who consume scents. Furthermore, other aspects of consuming scents are like this: when people get sick, for those sick people, in temples or monasteries, the scent of whatever incense is burned will satisfy them. They will obtain sustenance from it and follow it. Based on that, they will obtain sustenance for their bodies. Thus, through the power of their karma, those hungry ghosts will become scent eaters and obtain food with great difficulty. Having been born there, as long as that sinful karma has not been destroyed, abandoned, and exhausted, they will experience the suffering of hunger and thirst. Later, they will be liberated from that realm of hungry ghosts. Having been liberated, they will also wander around in samsara, experiencing the fruits of karma in accordance with that karma and its causes. If, due to karma created by humans that is to be experienced, one is born as a human, like a turtle entering a yoke hole among hundreds of people, then that person will be poor and sickly, and it will be seen that a smell emanates from their entire body. Furthermore, monks, one who knows the ripening of karmic results, if they contemplate the realm of hungry ghosts, then with the wisdom arising from hearing, they will see how hungry ghosts who eat the offerings of Dharma obtain entry into that state and obtain sustenance. Thinking about what karma causes them to be born there, if they contemplate with the wisdom arising from hearing, then whoever is naturally stingy and overwhelmed by jealousy, and who, with the sole means or cause of sustaining life, lacks faith, and for those who lack faith, teaches doctrines that are counted as faults with the intention of not benefiting others, and who is not virtuous, such as teaching about the Dharma of killing, the Dharma of dying in battle, the Dharma of forcibly seizing wealth, and the Dharma of letting herds roam freely. Having shown those categories of Dharma that are counted as faults to others, and not giving away whatever is gained from that, but only being stingy, then that evil person who is overwhelmed by jealousy, upon separating from their body, will fall into a bad rebirth and be born among the hungry ghosts who eat the offerings of Dharma. At that time, it will be as before. That

Running all over from one place to another, the body is tormented by hunger and thirst, and cries are uttered everywhere. Like a dry tree, the hair is long and disheveled, dark, the whole body is covered with disheveled hair, entangled with a network of blood vessels and tendons, leaving only skin and bones. The body is long and the nails are ugly. Completely deceived by one's own misdeeds. The eye sockets are long and shrunken, and the face is covered with tears. The body is like a black cloud, covered with ugliness. Bees, flesh-eating flies, and creatures called Markotaka enter and eat all the limbs and small limbs and hairs, so they run around everywhere. If hundreds and thousands of them enter the monastery of the Sangha and run around, then, if they can obtain offerings given to the local deities on the first day in the Sangha or the monastery of the Sangha, or the abbot of the Sangha, or the Dharma offerings given by others, they will be very satisfied, and will be very full because of it. It will obtain food for survival. It will obtain life, namely: As long as that sinful karma is not destroyed, abandoned, and exhausted, one will continue to suffer the suffering of pretas. After being liberated from that suffering, also because it is in accordance with that karma and cause, having done various and diverse kinds of one's own karma, one will experience various kinds of lives in samsara. If hundreds and thousands of them are born as humans, sharing the blessings with people, like a turtle entering the hole of a yoke, then they will be like a Brahmin, slaughtering or eating livestock in front of the idols. Survival always depends on others, and one will obtain survival because of this. Then, again, because of being associated with that sinful action, one sees beings falling into hell. Then, the bhikkhu, with the wisdom of knowing the ripening of karmic results, observes the world of pretas. With the wisdom that comes from hearing, he sees how the pretas called "preta drinking water" exist in the world of pretas. Thinking, "From where will they be born?" he observes with the wisdom that comes from hearing, like this, beings who are overwhelmed by unreasonable greed, those who sell alcohol, whoever has alcohol in their house, mixed alcohol, or brown sugar.
