And furthermore, from there, due to the deeds that are in accordance with that karma, how the deeds done by oneself draw near, one wanders completely in samsara. If, like a turtle inserting its head into the hole of a yoke, one is born as a human being sharing fortune with people, then when he dwells in the womb, the mother will become without desire for food. Because of that, the mother's body and face will become exceedingly ugly. If he dwells in that very womb, then the karma that is exceedingly powerful and the life-cutting that is exceedingly powerful will cause death. If, again, one is born after a hundred difficulties, then the impermanence of that compounded thing, which has accumulated such evil deeds, will become foul-smelling, ugly in color, and without luster. That life's sustenance will be short-lived and obtained with great difficulty. Even the king, the lord of the land, will imprison him in that way, and he will see him die from hunger and thirst. Then again, O bhikṣu, knowing the ripening of the fruits of karma, he contemplates the world of pretas. With the knowledge arising from hearing, he sees how the preta called 'scent-eater' exists. There, thinking, 'By what karma will one be born?', he contemplates with the knowledge arising from hearing. Those who accumulate a great deal of food and drink, and eat only for themselves, and do not properly distribute it to their children and wives. If they want to taste the flavor, they only allow them to smell the scent. He eats alone in front of his children and wife, and because he is seized by jealousy and stinginess, he does not give a proper share. In this way, he despises being together harmoniously with his children and wife, and he rejoices in giving the best to others, and then he eats alone, and even after doing that, he does not consider it a fault, nor does he feel ashamed, then he will depart from the body and fall into a bad rebirth, and be born among the scent-eating pretas. Having been born there, the body is always tormented by hunger and thirst, and running wherever he happens to be, he emits cries of weeping, wailing, and lamentation. If a patron, with faith, burns fragrant incense in a temple, or a stupa, or another house, he will be pleased by that. Likewise, he will also be pleased by other scents. Like that.
