Cows and, eating garlands and, eating blood and, eating meat and, eating incense and, using violence and, looking for opportunities and, living underground and, powerful hungry ghosts and, bodies burning brightly at night and, looking for opportunities for people and, Forms of desire and, living between continents and, Yama's staff and, eating children and, Brahma's demons and, eating grain husks and, eating impure things and, living on the main road and, eating a lot and, eating torches and, eating poison and, living in monasteries and, living in cemeteries and, living in trees and, living at crossroads and, retinues of demons, thus in brief, there are thirty-six kinds of hungry ghosts. Broadly speaking, the differences in the karmic aspects of thoughts and the differences in various thoughts are immeasurable. Then, monks, those who understand the ripening of the fruits of karma, most of the beings who are extremely hungry and thirsty are weakened by jealousy and stinginess, and broadly speaking, they are born from the three actions of body, speech, and mind, and specifically, they are born among the hungry ghosts because they are fully in accordance with the ten paths of non-virtuous actions. In short, all the suffering of living beings depends on the non-virtuous cause of the ten paths of non-virtuous actions. They practice it, are born from it, originate from it, follow it, are related to it, and arise from that cause, and even though they wander in the lower realms, they do not become weary of samsara. The mind is like a monkey, entering samsara from beginningless time, accustomed to dwelling in the midst of intense suffering, bound in a network of various branches and twigs, quickly dwelling on the mountain of samsara, and the conceptualizations of the habits of the deep mind are not easy to understand either, and this swift movement is like a mind-monkey. Therefore, this mind must first be thoroughly tamed. If this is not done, then sentient beings will suffer greatly in the unbearable lower realms, If this is not done, then in samsara one will be seized by the enemy of the mind, and it will be seen that happiness cannot be attained.

So it is. Thus, when a monk thoroughly distinguishes each aspect in this way, he repeatedly becomes disgusted and displeased with this cycle of existence, and he reproaches all the sufferings that belong to the cycle of existence. When the monk thinks in this way and contemplates the various forms of pretas, thoroughly distinguishing them in this way means thoroughly distinguishing one aspect of the cause of karma and the ripening of karma, that birth is not without cause, and that happiness, suffering, agreement and disagreement, bad rebirth, good rebirth, birth in a good family, and birth in a bad family, the life and death of all sentient beings are not done even slightly by free will. The monk who knows the ripening of the law of karma distinguishes the differences in the laws of karma of the pretas. When he examines with the wisdom arising from hearing, the so-called "hungry ghost with a curved belly" is twice as large as his own body, his mouth, hands, and feet are weakened, and everything is curved in his belly. The gaps in the holes are filled with sparks. The body is tormented by hunger and thirst. The body is like a burnt tree, bound from endless time, without joy, without friends, and without protectors. By what cause will they be born there? After thinking like this, he examines with the wisdom arising from hearing, whoever desires wages and wealth, thinking like this: I will accumulate wages and so on in my home, and commit murder and harm livestock, or he has no compassion, because of greed, he commits murder, cultivates, practices, and does it a lot, then after his body separates, he falls into a bad rebirth, five hundred yojanas below the earth, he will be born into the family of hungry ghosts with curved bellies. He was born in that dark place on the earth, and the mountains pressed from above, and the two mountains lifted from below, and between the two mountains, the size of his own body was flattened like a yojana, and he was extremely tormented by hunger and thirst. The limit of the measure of life is five hundred lifetimes, and ten human years are one day in the way of counting hungry ghosts, and there is a time of death in between. He committed a second non-virtuous deed.
