For the benefit of all sentient beings, Tathagata, please explain what causes and conditions lead to falling into this hell, as well as the shape and size of the hell, and how many kalpas the suffering of maturation will last. The World Honored One replied: Manjushri, you are very wise! Very wise! It is also very wise to ask such a question! Listen carefully and also contemplate the many examples. I will explain in detail. How is it called the Avici sentient being hell? Because it is tormented without interruption for even a moment, it is called the Avici Hell. On the one hand, there is nothing to prevent or divert, and there is no change. The heat is extreme, the suffering is extremely unbearable, without any relaxation for even a moment, without stopping for even a moment, without any gap, so it is called the Avici Hell. On the other hand, great fire burns, extremely hot, burning everywhere, burning fiercely, spreading into the interior, so it is called the Avici Hell. The World Honored One again said to Manjushri: Son of good family, the shape of the great Avici Hell is square, flat and wide, with eighty thousand yojanas. There is nothing that can compare to the smell of that place. The four gates of that hell, each gate has eighteen guardians of hell. The head is the head of a Rakshasa, and the mouth is like the mouth of a Rakshasa. There are eighteen horns on the head, and in the hand is held an iron staff. Inside the seven layers of walls, there are countless iron banners, and the fire that comes out of the top of the banners is like a fountain. The molten iron liquid that flows down is like rain, spreading everywhere. The four gates of hell, each gate has eighteen large copper pots, inside which the boiling iron liquid overflows, flowing to the four gates, filling the entire hell. In each room's interval, there are also eighty-four thousand huge iron snakes, which spew venomous fire from their mouths, filling the entire enclosure. The sound of the snakes roaring is like a great thunder. The rain of huge iron hammers also fills the entire Avici hell. The unbearable suffering there is eight hundred and forty trillion, and among the sufferings, the most unbearable sufferings are all gathered there, unparalleled. The four gates of the Avici hell, outside each gate, there burns an extremely spreading fire, the fire burning interwoven in the north, south, east, and west. The suffering arises all at once, just as mentioned above. If one does not confess the four roots, eight branches, five inexpiable sins, and slandering right view, as described in this sutra, and has no shame or remorse, then that person, immediately after death, like a strong man stretching and contracting his arm, will fall into the Avici hell. The body is also filled with that hell, suffering from the torment of the heatwave, opening and closing the mouth, closing and opening the eyes, but unable to speak because the mouth is blocked. All of these are multiplied by hundreds, thousands, and millions, as previously stated. If anyone completely destroys these four roots, the great suffering experienced will last until the end of five great kalpas. Destroying the eight precepts is one degree more than that. Committing the five inexpiable sins is also one degree more than that. Slandering the Sameness Sutra is also one degree more than that. Cursing the Three Jewels, stealing the property of the Sangha, engaging in impure conduct with monks and nuns, defiling them, usurping the authority of Khenpos and Acharyas, and committing incest with one's mother, all increase by one degree more than the previous sins. Those who engage in perverse conduct, having severed the root of virtue, will never be liberated from the Avici Hell, except there. When such sinners experience suffering, the blazing fire spreads and enters their bodies, causing them to faint and die. Then, the hell guardians strike the ground with iron rods, shouting, "Come alive! Come alive!" With the sound of their shouts, they revive again and again, dying ten thousand times and living ten thousand times in a single day and night, experiencing unbearable great suffering, as previously stated. If one day they emerge from the Avici Hell, they will again enter the minor hells due to breaking vows and accepting offerings from faithful patrons. There are freezing hells, dark hells, extremely hot hells, hells filled with razors, sword-wheel hells, fire-chariot hells, mud of excrement hells, hot spring hells, fire-ember ravines, sword-leaf forest hells, iron wheel hells, iron Shalmali tree pillar hells, iron bed hells, iron wheel hells, iron cave hells, iron mortar hells, accumulated crushing heap hells, and copper molten excrement hells. In each of these hells, one must endure suffering for eight hundred million years before finally being liberated, but even then, one is always born into a base existence, and for five hundred lifetimes
