Although it is the body of... Son of good family, in this great city in Jambudvīpa, there are twenty men who have become the last existence, and there are also twenty men who are the enemies of these twenty men. Then these twenty enemy men each secretly plot hostile actions, thinking, "Let us act like friends and go to their homes to take their lives." They think like this, but no one speaks to anyone. Son of good family, then these twenty men who have become the last existence, and those who would kill these men, all come to where the Tathagata is by the power of the Buddha. Son of good family, then the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, in order to subdue these forty men, and also in order to subdue many beings at that time, spoke to the great son of Maudgalyayana: "Son of Maudgalyayana, from this great earth will arise a splinter of sandalwood, and this will pierce the right foot of the Tathagata." Not long after the Tathagata spoke these words, at that moment, a splinter of sandalwood about a cubit high arose from the great earth. Then the venerable great son of Maudgalyayana said to the Tathagata: "World Honored One, I will throw this splinter of sandalwood into another world." I said to him, "Son of Maudgalyayana, you cannot do it." Son of good family, then the abiding great son of Maudgalyayana used all his strength to shake and lift up this three-thousand great-thousand world, but the splinter of sandalwood did not rise even a fraction of a hair's tip. Then the Tathagata appeared in the Brahma world, and the splinter of sandalwood also appeared in the Brahma world. Then the Tathagata sat on his seat, and the splinter of sandalwood remained as before. Similarly, when he sat in the middle of the blue ocean, the splinter of sandalwood was also there. Again, when the Tathagata went to the mountain shoulder, there also...

There was a sandalwood stump. Then the Tathagata sat on the seat, and the sandalwood stump remained as before. The Tathagata held his right foot with his right hand and placed it on the sandalwood stump. Then, the venerable Ananda said to me: "World Honored One, what deeds did the Tathagata do in the past that resulted in such a ripening of karma?" I said to Ananda, "In the past, when I went to the great ocean mirror, the merchant who was killed by a spear, this is the remainder of the ripening of that karma." Thus he spoke. Then, at that time, the World Honored One spoke this verse: Wherever one may be, deeds will not disappear. There is no place like that. Not in the sky, not in the middle of the ocean, nor on the ridge of a mountain. Son of good family, then those twenty people thought: "Even the Tathagata, the king of Dharma, will have a ripening of karma, why wouldn't we have a ripening of karma?" Then, at that time, in front of the Tathagata, "World Honored One, we unintentionally took life. We confess our faults in front of the Tathagata." In any case, those forty people will realize wisdom, and thirty-two thousand sentient beings will obtain the pure Dharma eye, free from dust and defilement. In order to exhaust karma, starting from karma, the Tathagata taught the Dharma in this way. Because of that cause and that condition, the Tathagata's foot was pierced by the sandalwood stump. This is also the skillful means of the Tathagata, not a karmic obscuration. Why is it that the Tathagata, who is free from illness, smells the washing medicine of the Utpala flower at the doctor Jivaka's place? At that time, not long after taking the Pratimoksha vows, five hundred monks, each of whom had reached the final stage of their lives, were dwelling in a dense forest. They were afflicted by a disease that could not be cured by extracting medicinal juices, and because of their respect for the Tathagata, they did not seek other medicines. Son of good family, then the Tathagata thought:

It is done. I was thinking, I have not allowed it, and those monks will also go to seek other medicines, what way is there to prevent this? Why is that? If the Tathagata allows it, then in the future the lineage of the noble ones will decline. Therefore, the Tathagata skillfully took the Udumbara flower washing medicine to the residence of the physician Jivaka. Then, the sons of the Pure Abode gods persuaded those monks, saying, 'You who have life, do not die now, go and seek other medicines!' Those monks said, 'We cannot transgress the teachings of the Tathagata, we would rather die. We cannot transgress the teachings of the Tathagata.' Then, those sons of the Pure Abode gods said to those monks, 'The Tathagata, the King of Dharma himself, only extracted the medicinal juice, if you seek other medicines, why don't you consider it? You who have life, go and seek other medicines!' That's what they said. Then, those five hundred monks arose without regret and sought other medicines, and they were completely liberated from the disease. Son of the lineage, if the Tathagata had not allowed other medicines, then it would not have been possible for those monks to seek other medicines. It would also not have been possible to be completely liberated from the disease or to become an Arhat. Why is that? The Tathagata is perfect in all merits, and for the sake of begging for food, he enters the city, and like washing a bowl, he returns again. Although the Tathagata has no karmic obscurations, the Tathagata protects future beings, so if some monks go to cities, towns, palaces, or any place around the king's palace, and because my merit is small, I do not get food, then at that time they will think, the Tathagata has accumulated so much merit, and like washing a bowl, he returns again, let alone us who have small roots of virtue? Do not be completely discouraged because you have not received food, you should remember the Tathagata.
