For example, parents give milk to their children. In order for the child to drink clean milk, the parents will specially take medicine to treat fever and diarrhea for the sake of the child. Similarly, the Tathagata, as the father of all sentient beings, observes that sentient beings are bound by karma, and will manifest illness as if not sick, telling them: "You have done some evil deeds, so you will have such consequences." When sentient beings hear this, they will feel disgusted. The wise should skillfully understand this. Son of good family, in the past, there were five hundred merchants who entered the sea to seek wealth. At that time, among these companions, there was an evil person, a doer of evil deeds, proficient in bows and arrows and weapons, who made a living by stealing and robbing others' property, disguised as a merchant. He was very cunning, so he was able to board that ship. That treacherous person thought: "I will kill all these merchants, take all their property, and then go to Jambudvipa (South Jambudvipa)." At that time, on the companion's ship, there was a captain named Great Compassionate Captain. Great Compassionate Captain dreamed in his sleep that the gods in the sea told him: "On this companion's ship, there is a person named so-and-so, who deceives others and robs others' property. He thinks: 'I will kill all these merchants, take all their property, and then go to Jambudvipa.' Therefore, this person will kill these merchants and commit terrible sins. Why? Because these five hundred merchants are all Bodhisattvas who abide in the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, and are irreversible Bodhisattvas. If this person kills these Bodhisattvas, then he will suffer in the great evil hell for each Bodhisattva, for the sake of each Bodhisattva, until he attains the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, because of the sin of this karmic obscuration.

因此，船长在梦中被告知，无论如何都要想办法，既要避免这个人堕入畜生道地狱，又要避免那些商人被杀。善男子，那时船长心想：我有什么办法既能不让这些商人被杀，又能不让这个人堕入畜生道地狱呢？他默默思索，不与他人交谈，七天没有起风，七天过去了。他心想：除了夺走这个人的性命，别无他法。他心想：即使我劝说所有商人，他们也会以不善之心杀人，而他们所有人都会堕入畜生道地狱。如果我夺走这个人的性命，为此我堕入畜生道地狱，我也愿意在千百万劫中反复堕入大畜生道地狱，但绝不能让这个人杀了这些商人，增加罪恶。善男子，就这样，那位具有大慈悲心的船长为了保护那些菩萨，以大慈悲和善巧方便，特意思考后用剑杀死了那个人。我当时就是那位具有大慈悲心的船长。善男子，我以善巧方便和大慈悲心，在千百万劫中背离了轮回。那个人死后转生到了天界。那些乘船的五百商人，后来在贤劫将成为五百尊佛。善男子，你怎么想？那位以善巧方便的智慧，在千百万劫中背离轮回的菩萨摩诃萨，会有丝毫业障吗？善男子，你不要那样看！如来是示现众生的业行。当如来的脚被檀木刺扎到时，也应视为是佛的威力。为什么呢？因为如来、阿罗汉、正等觉佛是金刚之身，不可摧毁。

He pondered silently, not speaking to others, and seven days passed without wind. He thought: There is no other way than to take this person's life. He thought: Even if I persuade all the merchants, they will kill with unkind intentions, and all of them will fall into the animal realm hell. If I take this person's life, and for that reason I fall into the animal realm hell, I would rather repeatedly fall into the great animal realm hell for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, but I must not let this person kill these merchants and increase evil. Noble son, in this way, that captain with great compassion, in order to protect those Bodhisattvas, with great compassion and skillful means, deliberately thought and killed that person with a sword. At that time, I was that captain with great compassion. Noble son, with skillful means and great compassion, I turned my back on samsara for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. That person died and was reborn in the heavenly realm. Those five hundred merchants who boarded the ship will later become five hundred Buddhas in the Fortunate Aeon. Noble son, what do you think? Does that Bodhisattva Mahasattva, who turned his back on samsara for hundreds of thousands of kalpas with the wisdom of skillful means, have even the slightest karmic obscuration? Noble son, do not look at it that way! The Tathagata shows the actions of sentient beings. When the Tathagata's foot is pierced by a sandalwood splinter, it should also be regarded as the power of the Buddha. Why is that? Because the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha is a vajra body, indestructible.
