The Noble Skillful Means, a Mahayana Sutra The Noble Skillful Means, a Mahayana Sutra In Sanskrit: Arya Upaya Kaushalya Nama Mahayana Sutra. In Tibetan: The Noble Skillful Means, a Mahayana Sutra. Volume One. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, at Anathapindika's monastery, together with a great Sangha of eighty-four thousand monks. Also present were sixty thousand Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, all possessing supernormal knowledge, having obtained dharanis, and possessing unimpeded eloquence. At that time, the Blessed One arose from deep samadhi and, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of attendants and with an escort clearing the path before him, taught the Dharma. At that time, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva named Wisdom Excellent came to the assembly and sat down. Then, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Wisdom Excellent, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and said to him: "If the Blessed One would grant me the opportunity to ask questions and prophesy for me, I would like to ask the Blessed One some questions." The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Wisdom Excellent: "Son of good family, ask the Tathagata whatever you wish, and I will satisfy your mind with the corresponding prophecy." After the Blessed One had spoken thus, Bodhisattva Wisdom Excellent asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the skillful means of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, the so-called skillful means?" The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Wisdom Excellent: "Son of good family, here, the skillful means of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is that even a single morsel of food can pervade all sentient beings. Why is that? Son of good family,

A Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in means, even if he gives a mouthful of food to a being belonging to the animal realm, is endowed with the mind of all-knowingness. He dedicates that root of virtue to all sentient beings. This pervades all sentient beings through two causes. What are the two? They are the mind of all-knowingness and the dedication. Son of good family, furthermore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is skilled in means rejoices in the root of virtue of others. Having rejoiced, he dedicates it to all sentient beings. He gives with the mind of all-knowingness, and surpasses the givers and those who receive. Son of good family, furthermore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means offers to all the Buddhas whatever flowers grow from trees in the ten directions that are fine and not yet taken, and whatever incense trees there are in the ten directions that are carried away by the wind, unclaimed, and he dedicates that root of virtue to all-knowingness. Son of good family, furthermore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means thinks of all the sentient beings in the ten directions who experience feelings of happiness, and he rejoices in them. Having rejoiced, he dedicates it to all-knowingness. Furthermore, whatever sentient beings in the ten directions experience feelings of suffering, he causes them all to cease, and he puts on such armor, saying, "May the suffering of those sentient beings come upon me, may they become happy." And he dedicates that root of virtue to enlightenment. Son of good family, furthermore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, if he prostrates to one Tathagata, he considers that he is prostrating to all the Tathagatas. He trains in this way: "The realm of Dharma of all the Buddhas is one, the discipline is one, the samadhi is one, the wisdom is one, the intention is one, the liberation is one, the seeing of the wisdom of liberation is one." Training in this way, prostrating to one Tathagata in this way, he considers that he is prostrating to all the Tathagatas. That one who is skilled in means,

Having revered one Buddha, one reveres all Buddhas. All the offerings made to those Buddhas in the ten directions are also fully received. Noble son, furthermore, a bodhisattva with skillful means, even if he sometimes becomes ignorant, will praise me by saying, "Do not kill me." When young, even if reciting a single four-line verse, he will teach in this way, saying, "The meaning of this four-line verse is also the meaning of all the scriptures." Having taught in this way, he recites that verse and makes the aspiration with an unflinching mind, "May all sentient beings who hear this four-line verse of mine attain the courage of a Buddha." In this way, by means of that root of virtue, he overwhelms the endless and incomparable hearing of all sentient beings, and also attains the courage of a Buddha. Noble son, furthermore, a bodhisattva with skillful means, if he sometimes becomes very poor, at that time, even if he is young and works for others, and obtains a handful of food, he will give it without hesitation to the Sangha or an individual. Having given it, he will also teach in this way, saying, "The Bhagavan has said that because the mind is great, the giving also becomes great." Even though my giving is small, the mind of the all-knowing one is immeasurable. Thinking that the mind of the all-knowing one is immeasurable, he gives that handful of food with the mind of the all-knowing one, and with this root of virtue, he wishes that all sentient beings may become like the Tathagata Precious Hand right now. By means of that handful of food, he manifests the nature of giving, the nature of ethics, and the nature of meditation, thereby accomplishing the activity of doing good. Noble son, furthermore, a bodhisattva with skillful means, even if he dwells together with the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, he does not desire them. If he sees someone honoring the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, he will cause himself to comprehend by two reasons. What are the two reasons? They are the activities of a Bodhisattva.
