Thus speaking, one becomes jealous of others for the sake of gain and respect. Because others obtain close use and complete use from it, they become agitated by that cause. They utter their names and curse, despise, and speak ill of them. They praise themselves, and due to jealousy, they proclaim that they possess superior human qualities. Therefore, they fall due to that thing. Having failed from the bliss of the Great Vehicle, they again incur a very heavy downfall from the Great Vehicle. Therefore, they will go to the lower realms. For example, someone wants to go to the Isle of Jewels, and having gone by boat on the great ocean, the boat itself is destroyed in the great ocean. Similarly, the first Bodhisattva also wants to cross the ocean of the Great Vehicle, but because of jealousy, they speak falsely, and as a result, their boat of faith is destroyed, and they obtain separation from the life of wisdom. Therefore, the first Bodhisattva, because of speaking falsely out of jealousy, will incur a very heavy downfall. This is the fifth root downfall of the first Bodhisattva. Furthermore, sons of good family, in the future, the first Bodhisattvas, whether householders or renunciates, will read, recite, and memorize the sutras and dharanis that are profound and endowed with emptiness, as well as patience, samadhi, and the great wisdom of beings adorned with the ground. This is the field of activity for Bodhisattvas with little effort, the Great Vehicle sutras. Having read them, they will extensively explain them to others. They say: "I have realized these teachings with my own intelligence, and out of compassion, I explain them to you in this way. You must meditate on this profound teaching in such a way that it becomes manifest, and like me now, you will also see wisdom." Without saying that they have directly realized these profound teachings, but merely explaining them after reading them, they sell themselves for the sake of gain and respect. Therefore, the three times

Before the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, and noble beings, there will be faults. Heavy downfalls will occur. Gods and humans will be deceived by the Mahayana. If he does not even become a Hearer Vehicle, what need to mention the Mahayana? What need to mention the distinction of realization in entering the Mahayana? What need to mention the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment? For example, a person goes to a vast wilderness, suffers from hunger and thirst, and becomes exhausted. He sits under a tree laden with great fruit for food. He abandons the tree laden with great fruit, fragrant and flavorful, and clings to a tasteless poisonous tree, eating its poisonous fruit. Having eaten it, he dies. That person is said to be similar to that example. Therefore, having obtained a human body that is extremely rare to find, relying on a virtuous friend, wanting to enter the Mahayana, but praising oneself and disparaging others for gain, respect, and fame, such a heavy downfall occurs. Because of the root of that downfall, all wise ones greatly condemn it, and one will fall into the lower realms. Such a person should not be associated with by any of the royal class, Brahmins, merchants, or commoners. Whoever associates with him is against all wise ones. This is the sixth root downfall of a Bodhisattva beginner. Furthermore, sons of good family, in the future, among the royal families, there will arise leading attendants, or ministers' attendants, or warriors' attendants, or physicians' attendants, fools who pride themselves on being wise, those with great wealth, and those with great enjoyment. They appear to be performing many kinds of meritorious deeds of generosity. They become fat and arrogant from giving, and through arrogance and fatness, they also divide the royal families. They also divide the monks from the royal families, and relying on the royal families, they also cut off the monks with punishments, depriving them with punishments of wealth, causing harm.

Therefore, those monks rob from individuals, Sanghas, the Sangha of the four directions, or stupas, and offer them as gifts. They also offer attendants to the royal families. Both of these actions become roots of downfall. This is the seventh root of downfall. Furthermore, the royal family's attendants, along with the renunciates, become corrupted. They label such Dharma as non-Dharma, and label non-Dharma as Dharma, thus abandoning the Dharma. They do not heed the teachings of the Sutras and Vinaya, do not heed the teachings of the dark side, do not heed the teachings of the great side. They abandon the teachings of loving-kindness, great compassion, the perfection of wisdom, skillful means, and whatever teachings are explained in other Sutras. In order to torment the monks, they engage in actions that do not accord with the Dharma. These actions will torment the monks. They will abandon the mindfulness that connects to calm abiding and insight. Those who meditate will become full of malice, and therefore, they will not pacify the monks' unpacified afflictions, nor will they make them subtle. At that time, the monks' minds will decline, their discipline will decline, their conduct and views will decline. Therefore, they will become lax, mostly they will become lax, and their discipline will decline. Those who are not renunciates will claim to be renunciates, those who are not celibate will claim to be celibate, and they will preach the Dharma with extreme clarity, like donkeys. The royal family and their retinue will show them great respect, service, and offerings. They will speak to the laypeople of the non-praise of those who strive to abandon the monks, and the royal family and their retinue will also hate and slander those who strive to abandon the monks. Whatever benefits and enjoyments are meant for those who strive to abandon the monks, they will offer to the monks who strive in recitation, and both of these actions will become roots of downfall. Why is that? Because the meditating monk is a sacred field, but the reciter and attendant are not.
