Do not rejoice in what pleases those who are fond of it. Asked, "Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas not condemn those things that are condemned by the Hearers? How do they not rejoice in what the Hearers rejoice in?" The Buddha said, "The Hearers condemn the places of birth, but you should not condemn them. If the Hearers are very pleased with their own complete Nirvana, you should not be very pleased with that, for that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, abide in the world, experience the laws of the world, do not be defiled by the world, and also liberate those who are bound in the world. Asked, "Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas abide in the world? How do they experience the laws of the world? How are they not defiled by the world? How do they liberate those who are bound in the world?" The Buddha said, "To abide in the world is in the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. To experience the laws of the world is to experience the eight worldly dharmas. To not be defiled by the world is because one is not moved by pleasure and pain. To liberate those who are bound in the world is to release them from the prison of the three realms, for that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, be light, be heavy, be painful, be happy. Asked, "Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas become light? How do they become heavy? How do they become painful? How do they become happy?" The Buddha said, "To be light is to wholeheartedly do whatever there is to do for all sentient beings. To be heavy is to be steadfast in one's chosen deity. To be painful is for those who are unfavorable enemies. To be happy is because of having done meritorious deeds, for that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, be invisible, and also be visible everywhere. Flee from those things that should be fled from, and stay where those things that should be stayed. Asked, "Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas have nothing? How do they also have everything? How do they flee from those things that should be fled from?

Venerable, how does one abide in what should be abided in? The reply: What should not be made apparent is to be completely free from all downfalls and errors. What should be made apparent in all ways is for the sake of perfectly accomplishing the Dharma that aids enlightenment. To be free from what should be avoided is to be free from fighting and arguing. To abide in what should be abided in is for the sake of gathering sentient beings, this is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, abide in what has not been done, abide in what has been done, and keep your minds equal in what has been done and not done. Asked: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas abide in what has not been done? How do they abide in what has been done? How do they keep their minds equal in what has been done and not done? The reply: To abide in what has not been done is for the sake of perfectly accomplishing the root of virtue. To abide in what has been done is for the sake of joining the root of virtue that has been done with the Dharma of the higher realms. To keep the mind equal in what has been done and not done is to have the perception of no difference between those who have moral discipline and those who have broken moral discipline, this is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, seek essence even from what has no essence, generate the perception of no essence even in essence, and act in essence and non-essence. Asked: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas seek essence in what has no essence? How do they generate the perception of no essence in essence? How do they act in essence and non-essence? The reply: What is called non-essence refers to the body, life, and enjoyments. Seeking essence is to completely accomplish the sacred Dharma from these. What is called essence refers to the unconditioned. For the sake of entering the Buddha's Dharma, one should generate the perception of it as non-essence. To act in essence and non-essence is to abandon attachment to the phenomena of the conditioned and the unconditioned, this is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, let vows diminish, let moral discipline not diminish, and those who have broken moral discipline...
