is for the sake of giving to all sentient beings, that is the rule! Sons of good family, therefore, understand attachment, practice attachment, observe those who are attached to attachment, and do not fall into non-attachment. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas seek attachment? How do they practice attachment? How do they observe those who are attached to attachment? How do they not fall into non-attachment? Answer: Attachment is the desire for the lesser vehicle and the mind of anger. These two are what Bodhisattvas should protect. Practicing attachment is in desire, form, and formlessness. Observing those who are attached to attachment, not falling into non-attachment, is the absence of manifest action, that is the rule! Sons of good family, therefore, lighten, and also carry a heavy burden, do not take what has not been taken, and bring what has been taken under control. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas lighten? How do they carry a heavy burden? How do they not take what has not been taken? How do they bring what has been taken under control? Answer: Lightening is cutting off all afflictions. Carrying a heavy burden is all sentient beings. Not taking what has not been taken is the vehicle of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Bringing what has been taken under control is the Great Vehicle, that is the rule! Sons of good family, therefore, also denigrate, also praise, also draw near, also abandon. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas denigrate? How do they praise? How do they draw near? How do they abandon? Answer: Denigration is denigrating all non-virtuous dharmas. Praise is praising all virtuous dharmas. Drawing near is the Noble Path. Abandoning is all paths of the non-virtuous side, that is the rule! Sons of good family, therefore, in villages, cities, rural areas, and royal palaces, show the power of meditation, and in temples and remote areas,

Please show me how to do it. Petitioner: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas demonstrate the power of meditation in villages, cities, rural areas, and palace surroundings? How do they show that they reduce afflictions in monasteries and remote areas? The Blessed One said: When you go to villages, cities, rural areas, and palace surroundings, forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangible objects will appear. These should be suppressed by the power of meditation. When you live in monasteries and remote areas, whatever afflictions arise should be suppressed by the qualities of solitude, which is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, you should also live in water, and you should always be thirsty, and you should also quench your thirst, and you should not be without thirst. Petitioner: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas exist in water? How are they always thirsty? How do they quench their thirst? How do they not make themselves without thirst? The Blessed One said: To live in water is to abide by the rule of Dharma. To always be thirsty is to be thirsty for Dharma. To quench thirst is to accomplish the activities of Dharma through Dharma. To not be without thirst is to not fall into the unconditioned, which is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, you should also be alone without friends, and you should also have many servants and many attendants. Petitioner: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas also act alone without friends? How do they have many servants and many attendants? The Blessed One said: To be alone without friends is to perfectly accomplish all roots of virtue. To have many servants is to nourish all sentient beings with those roots of virtue. To have many attendants, what is called many attendants is the Dharma of the aspects of enlightenment, which is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, you should also be liberated, and you should also be imprisoned, and you should also go to the other shore, and you should also live in a great river. Petitioner: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas

How is one liberated? How is one imprisoned? How does one reach the other shore? How does one abide in the great river? The Buddha declared: Liberation is from all the bonds of afflictions and demons. Imprisonment is being born intentionally in various lives. Reaching the other shore is understanding the language of all sentient beings. Abiding in the great river is for the sake of saving sentient beings carried away by the four rivers; that is the principle. Sons of good family, therefore, discriminate even what is finite. Comprehend what is infinite in equality. They asked: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas discriminate even what is finite? How do they comprehend what is infinite in equality? The Blessed One declared: Sons of good family, what is finite is conditioned. What is infinite is unconditioned. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should not abandon the conditioned, nor should they associate with the afflictions that belong to the conditioned. The unconditioned should also be examined, but one should not enter without fault. With the wisdom that possesses the characteristic of the oneness of the conditioned and the unconditioned, one should awaken to complete perfect enlightenment in the equality of the essence of enlightenment; that is the principle. When these words of principle were taught, eight thousand sons of the gods generated the mind of enlightenment. Five hundred Bodhisattvas obtained tolerance of the unborn dharma. The Blessed One having thus spoken, the world with its gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, rejoiced, and highly praised what the Blessed One had said. The Noble Sutra of the Great Vehicle, called "The Principle of Dharma," is complete. Translated, revised, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Prajñāvarman and the reviser-translator, the monk Yeshe De, and others.
