Venerable, how does one seek the common Dharma? Answer: To engage in what is contrary to custom is to turn away from the conduct of all ordinary people. To train according to the Dharma is to engage in all the trainings of a Bodhisattva. To know the common Dharma is to turn away from the meditative absorption of neither perception nor non-perception and to appear in the desire realm; this is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, do not mix nectar with poison. Do not associate with those who are without poison. Give the gift of nectar to those who are with poison. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas not mix nectar with poison? How do they not associate with those who are without poison? How do they give the gift of nectar to those who are with poison? Answer: Nectar is diligence. Poison is non-diligence. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should be diligent and not mix with a mind of non-diligence. Those who are without poison are the Hearers. One should not associate with them. Those who are with poison are the ordinary people. One should show them nectar; this is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, do not rejoice in what should be rejoiced in. Rejoice in what should not be rejoiced in. Also, be with joy and attachment. Also, completely cut off joy and attachment. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas not rejoice in what should be rejoiced in? How do they rejoice in what should not be rejoiced in? How are they with joy and attachment? How do they completely cut off joy and attachment? Answer: What should be rejoiced in is the grasping at self and the grasping at what belongs to self. One should not rejoice in these. What should not be rejoiced in is the obstruction to the wisdom of the Buddhas by the Maras. One should rejoice in this. To be with joy and attachment is to have craving as a companion in samsara. To completely cut off joy and attachment is cessation.

to be fully understood, that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, also bind with bonds. Also liberate those who are bound by bonds. Also honor and serve those who are liberated. Also follow those who are not liberated. Question: Blessed One, how are Bodhisattvas bound by bonds? How do they liberate those who are bound? How do they honor and serve those who are liberated? How do they follow those who are not liberated? Answer: To bind with bonds is with the bonds of discipline. To liberate from bonds is from the bonds of craving. To honor and serve those who are liberated is to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. To follow those who are not liberated is to fully ripen the various ordinary beings, that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, for those things that should be desired, desire them. For those things that should not be desired, do not desire them. Also be free from desire. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas seek those things that should be sought? How do they not seek those things that should not be sought? How do they be free from seeking? Answer: What Bodhisattvas should not desire are all the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, do not desire them. What should be desired by the world with the gods are the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, desire them. What should be freed from desire is to look to Indra and Brahma, that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, avoid despising even the smallest seed. Also have faith in the immeasurable field. Do not strive for great attainment. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas not despise even the smallest seed? How do they have faith in the immeasurable field? How do they not strive for great attainment? Answer: What is called the smallest seed is the smallest root of virtue, do not despise it. To have faith in the immeasurable field is to have faith in the immeasurable generosity offered to the Buddha. Not striving for great attainment
