The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra called "The Mode of Dharma" The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra called "The Mode of Dharma" In Indian language: Āryadharmaṇayanānāmamahāyānasūtra. In Tibetan language: The Noble Mahāyāna Sūtra called "The Mode of Dharma". Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park, in the bamboo-made round pavilion. At that time, many Bodhisattvas, assembled and seated in the bamboo-made round pavilion, thought to themselves: How should we abide? How should we practice? How should we engage in yoga? How should we fully ripen sentient beings? Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of those many Bodhisattvas, went to the bamboo-made round pavilion and sat on the prepared seat. Having sat down, the Blessed One spoke to those many Bodhisattvas, saying: Noble sons, well done, well done! Your contemplation is good! The question in your mind is beautiful! Your courage is virtuous! Your intention is proper! Noble sons, therefore, listen well and keep it in mind! I will explain to you the mode of the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, which demonstrates all the conduct of a Bodhisattva and declares all the Buddha's teachings. The Bodhisattvas replied: Blessed One, very well. Then, those Bodhisattvas listened to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to them: Noble sons, therefore, be those with the mind of nirvāṇa! Be those connected to saṃsāra! Do not abide in either saṃsāra or nirvāṇa! They asked: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas become those with the mind of nirvāṇa and those connected to saṃsāra? And how do they not abide in saṃsāra and nirvāṇa? The Blessed One replied: In order to attain the bliss of immortality, nirvāṇa...

is one who possesses wise thoughts. is one who is associated with samsara for the sake of accumulating roots of virtue. is one who, because of relying on noble ones and ordinary beings, does not abide in either samsara or nirvana; this is the way. sons of good family, therefore, thoroughly tame your own minds! protect the minds of others! become courageous ones! question: lord, how do bodhisattvas thoroughly tame their own minds? how do they protect the minds of others? how are they courageous ones? answer: by eliminating afflictions, one tames one's own mind. by being without anger, one protects the minds of others. by not abandoning the mind of enlightenment, one is courageous; this is the way. sons of good family, therefore, do not act contrary to what should be done! also pay attention to what should not be done! do not expect a return for what has been done! question: lord, how do bodhisattvas not act contrary to what should be done? how do they also pay attention to what should not be done? how do they not expect a return for what has been done? answer: not acting contrary to what should be done is to have faith in the ripening of karma by engaging in the dharma of dependent origination. paying attention to what should not be done is to engage in great compassion. not expecting a return for what has been done is not expecting to be repaid with benefits; this is the way. sons of good family, therefore, do not rise at the wrong time! do not sleep when the time is right! awaken those who are sleeping! always sleep! question: lord, how do bodhisattvas not rise at the wrong time? how do they not sleep when the time is right? how do they awaken those who are sleeping? how do they always sleep? answer: not rising at the wrong time is not teaching the dharma to those who have not become vessels. not sleeping when the time is right is not going beyond those who have become vessels. awakening those who are sleeping is to encourage them at the right time and at the wrong time. always sleeping is not rising from meditative absorption; this is the way. sons of good family, therefore, be unreliable! destroy the reliable! make the unreliable reliable! question:

Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas not trust? How do they destroy trust? How do they trust those who do not trust? The Buddha said: Not trusting means not placing trust in formless absorptions. Destroying trust means abandoning absorptions. Trusting those who do not trust means trusting those who have gone astray; that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, be endowed with wealth, give without expecting anything in return, do not expect any reward, and live by great gains. They asked: Venerable One, how are Bodhisattvas endowed with wealth? How do they give without seeking anything in return? How do they not expect any reward? How do they live by great gains? The Buddha said: Being endowed with wealth means being endowed with the seven kinds of wealth. Giving without seeking anything in return means applying the miserly to giving and applying those with shallow wisdom to wisdom. Not expecting any reward means also striving to fulfill one's own needs. Living by great gains means dedicating all merit to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment; that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, also understand attachment, also make use of attachment, also look after those who are attached to attachment, and also protect those who are without attachment. They asked: Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas understand attachment? How do they make use of attachment? How do they look after those who are attached to attachment? How do they protect those who are without attachment? The Buddha said: Understanding attachment refers to the formless absorptions. Making use of attachment means cutting off the six sense sources. Looking after those who are attached to attachment means bringing each individual to maturity. Protecting those who are without attachment means not letting them make mistakes; that is the rule. Sons of good family, therefore, be fearful, do not be overly joyful, do not have affection, and do not have compassion. They asked: Venerable One, how do Bodhisattvas be fearful?
