Therefore, it should be recognized that this arises dependently. For those dharmas that appear due to dependent arising, one should not despise them, for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings. One should not abide in appearance and non-appearance, because it is free from duality; that is the principle. Sons of good family, therefore, do not be attached to whatever should be truly gathered. Also, do not relax your effort for the sake of truly gathering. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas not have desire for whatever should be truly gathered? How do they not relax their effort for the sake of truly gathering? Answer: Truly gathering means the roots of virtue. Not having desire for that means giving to sentient beings without looking for reward. Not relaxing effort in truly gathering means striving without knowing satisfaction in the roots of virtue; that is the principle. Sons of good family, therefore, also be difficult to fathom. Also, manifest in the clarity of conduct. Question: Blessed One, how are Bodhisattvas difficult to fathom? How do they also exist in the clarity of conduct? Answer: Difficult to fathom means entering into the profound, which even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot fathom. Also, appearing in the clarity of conduct means mingling with the dharmas of ordinary people; that is the principle. Sons of good family, therefore, turn away from the wrong path. Also, manifest when lost on the path. Also, do not abandon the true path. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas turn away from the wrong path? How do they also manifest when lost on the path? How do they not abandon the true path? Answer: Turning away from the wrong path means deviating from the path of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Manifesting when lost on the path is for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings. Not abandoning the true path is like this: the path of the six perfections; that is the principle. Sons of good family, therefore, also put on the armor of non-retrogression. Also, turn back from everything. Turn

Please also liberate me! Question: World-Honored One, how do Bodhisattvas don the armor of non-retrogression? How do they turn away from everything? How do they turn away and then be liberated? The Buddha answered: "Donning the armor of non-retrogression" means abiding in vows that accord with the Dharma. "Turning away from everything" means turning away from vows that do not accord with the Dharma. "Turning away and then being liberated" means abandoning all non-virtuous dharmas; this is the method. Sons of good family, therefore, be tamed, constantly discriminate, be steadfast, and also be wise and not foolish. Question: World-Honored One, how do Bodhisattvas tame themselves? How do they constantly discriminate? How do they remain steadfast? How are they wise and not foolish? The Buddha answered: "Being tamed" means subduing the power of Mara. "Constantly discriminating" means knowing the various minds that flow from one to another without abiding. "Being steadfast" means practicing. "Being wise and not foolish" means focusing on various virtuous dharmas; this is the method. Sons of good family, therefore, also conform, constantly be averse, observe for a long time, and do not retaliate for what has been done. Question: World-Honored One, how do Bodhisattvas conform? How do they constantly be averse? How do they observe for a long time? How do they not retaliate for what has been done? The Buddha answered: "Conforming" means conforming to the Mahayana. "Being averse" means being averse to the Hinayana. "Observing for a long time" means completely embracing samsara. "Not retaliating for what has been done" means not retaliating for the sins that have been committed; this is the method. Sons of good family, therefore, give very generously, also be stingy, and also have no clinging thoughts. Question: World-Honored One, how do Bodhisattvas give very generously? How are they stingy? How do they have no clinging thoughts? The Buddha answered: "Giving very generously" means giving alms in order not to abandon all sentient beings.

To be miserly is for those who have not become vessels. To have a mind without attachment is because there should be no concealment of the teacher's example in the Dharma, for that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, those who have abandoned, completely grasp them. Those who have completely grasped, let them be abandoned. Act like a sick person, and also heal the sick. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas completely grasp those who have abandoned? How do they abandon those who have completely grasped? How do they become like sick people? And how do they heal the sick? The Buddha replied: To completely grasp those who have abandoned is that Bodhisattvas should completely grasp those beings who are certain to be on the wrong path and have been abandoned by all the Buddhas. To abandon those who have completely grasped is all those who are learning and not learning. To act like a sick person and also to heal the sick is to deliberately show old age and sickness and then teach the Dharma to individual beings, for that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, ignite the works of demons, and pacify the Dharma of the Buddhas. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas ignite the works of demons? And how do they pacify the Dharma of the Buddhas? The Buddha replied: To ignite the works of demons is for those who are diligent in virtuous Dharma. To pacify the Dharma of the Buddhas is to connect all Dharmas without afflictions and near afflictions, for that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, fight with the demons, and do not seek a teacher. Question: Blessed One, how do Bodhisattvas fight with demons? And how do they not seek a teacher? The Buddha replied: To fight with demons is when Bodhisattvas are maturing beings, the demons strive to create obstacles. Not seeking a teacher is to be endowed with all virtuous Dharmas, for that is the way. Sons of good family, therefore, do not blame those who should be blamed by the Hearers; to those whom the Hearers
