Is that so? The Buddha said: Ananda, whoever hears the name "Shakyamuni" itself becomes a seed for their enlightenment. Ananda, if hearing the names of the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha were meaningless, then the Tathagata would not speak of non-duality. Ananda, what do you think about this? Like a banyan tree, how big is the seed of a banyan tree whose shade can accommodate a hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, or five hundred living beings? Ananda replied: Blessed One, its seed is small. The Blessed One said: Ananda, is it the case that from that seed, which is so small, it grows into a banyan tree, and then gradually grows, flourishes, expands, and extends? Ananda replied: Blessed One, that is indeed the case. The Buddha said: Ananda, just as the banyan tree grows from a small seed, and then gradually grows, flourishes, expands, and extends, similarly, Ananda, the seed of hearing the name of Shakyamuni will gradually lead to the attainment of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, it will not be wasted, it will not be completely wasted, and it will not decay. Why is that? Ananda, because the seed of all dharmas is impermanent, therefore it will not be completely wasted. Ananda, the seed of all dharmas is not wasted, therefore it will not be wasted. Ananda, the seed of all dharmas is without attachment, therefore it will not decay. Thus spoke the Buddha. The venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is this? Is this the Blessed One's previous aspiration? Or is it the nature of things that hearing the names of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is meaningful? The Blessed One said: Ananda, I have made the aspiration that whoever hears my name will become irreversible from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. This is also the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. Why is that? Ananda, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones

All past things are equal by all dharmas. Question: World Honored One, when the Buddhas, World Honored Ones, are equal by the nature of dharma, why do they make aspirations? Answer: Bodhisattvas, those who have not heard this supreme dharma, make aspirations, and through this aspiration, they will quickly obtain the opportunity to hear this dharma teaching. Question: World Honored One, those who possess such forms of dharma and act for the benefit of many sentient beings, it is wonderful that the Buddhas, World Honored Ones, possess such vast dharma! The World Honored One answered: Ananda, it is just so. For example, for the sake of the Buddha, I have done benefit for many sentient beings. Ananda, my Buddha land is not endowed with the five degenerations. Ananda, in the past I served and revered the Buddhas, World Honored Ones, without regard for body and life, completely giving away all possessions, being free from stinginess, initiating great diligence, not abiding in all dharmas, benefiting all sentient beings, and for the sake of not proclaiming all dharmas, I perfectly accomplished complete enlightenment. After saying this, the Venerable Ananda asked the World Honored One: World Honored One, it is wonderful that this dharma teaching has no obstacles from evil demons! Answer: Ananda, have you not heard? Because Manjushri, who has become a youth, previously blessed it, therefore there are no obstacles. Then, Manjushri, who has become a youth, withdrew that blessing. As soon as Manjushri, who has become a youth, withdrew the blessing for the sake of the evil demon, from then on, in a dream-like moment, the evil demon heard the sound of the irreversible wheel and also heard the name of Shakyamuni. Then, the evil demon was frightened and terrified, his hair stood on end, and he said: All my victories will become non-victories, all my lands will become non-lands. Saying this, he wept and wailed sadly. As he wept and wailed sadly, he transformed into an aged form, like this.

For example, just as a hundred-year-old person becomes decrepit, so too does the body become aged. Then, the Evil One Mara, together with the assembly of the fourfold army and all the gods of the Mara race in the three-thousandfold great thousandfold world realm, did this: just as the arrangement of the Bhagavan who attained enlightenment, they went to where the Bhagavan was. Then, the Evil One Mara reached the Bhagavan and appeared to be afflicted by old age, just as a hundred-year-old person leans forward and walks with a staff, so too did the Evil One Mara reach the Bhagavan. Having arrived, the gods abiding in the sky proclaimed to his fourfold army the sound of the irreversible wheel and the sound of having attained the irreversible state by hearing the name of Shakyamuni. Having proclaimed thus, the entire assembly of the fourfold army was stopped and hesitated, and did not follow the Evil One Mara. Then, the Evil One Mara, alone and without a second, went to the Bhagavan and pleaded with the Bhagavan, saying: "Bhagavan, I am alone, without a second, and afflicted by old age. There is no one to lift me up by the hand, and all my victories are not true victories, and all my lands are not true lands. The Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, is compassionate towards all sentient beings, so please, Bhagavan, have compassion for me. Since there is no one else to help me other than the Bhagavan himself, please have mercy on me." Having pleaded thus, the Bhagavan spoke to the Evil One Mara, saying: "Evil One Mara, the realm of sentient beings is vast. Evil One, even if Buddhas, the Bhagavan, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, were to appear in the world in a single day, Evil One, they could not exhaust the realm of sentient beings." Having spoken thus, the Evil One Mara pleaded with the Bhagavan, saying:
