She is the great mother. The wise should worship her. Then, the Great Brahma, with the essence of the gods, pleaded thus: Venerable One, Blessed One, if those who have renounced in the Buddha's teachings are struck or beaten by a king, a great minister, or a powerful person with whips and sticks, or if they are imprisoned, reviled, threatened, have their limbs cut off, or are killed by being separated from their lives, is that reasonable? Or is it unreasonable? The Blessed One spoke to the Great Brahma, with the essence of the gods, saying: Son of good family, any sentient being who renounces in my teachings, shaves their hair and beard, and wears the saffron robe, whether they uphold the precepts or not, or even if they have no precepts, all gods, humans, asuras, and so forth should not treat them as householders. What need is there to mention striking and beating their bodies with whips and sticks, imprisoning them, scolding them, reviling them, cutting off their limbs, or separating them from their life force, which are all unrighteous actions? Why is that? Even if we don't talk about those who uphold the precepts and are learned, merely renouncing in my teachings, even if they have broken their precepts and engage in unwholesome conduct, are rotten inside, filled with impurity, like a worm-eaten melon, claiming to be a renunciate when they are not, claiming to practice celibacy when they do not, defeated, destroyed, and overthrown by various afflictions, even such a bad monk with broken precepts will become the teacher and guide of all gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and so forth, and will become a treasure of immeasurable precious qualities. Furthermore, son of good family, those who have renounced in my teachings, even if their precepts are impaired, merely seeing their form will cause sentient beings to generate ten kinds of superior thoughts, and thus they will obtain ten immeasurable accumulations of precious qualities. What are these ten? For example, those who have renounced in my teachings, even if their precepts are impaired, if sentient beings are able to see

Remembering the Buddha, with reverence and respect, one generates increased aspiration of faith and devotion. By that cause and that condition, from never inclining towards the teachers of non-Buddhists, their scriptures, and their retinues, one transforms until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear. Some, upon seeing, remember the morality of the noble ones, and generate increased aspiration. By that cause and that condition, from completely abandoning killing, completely abandoning taking what is not given, completely abandoning sexual misconduct, completely abandoning lying, completely abandoning the place of carelessness, drinking intoxicating liquor and so on, one transforms until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear. Some, upon seeing, remember generosity, and generate increased aspiration. By that cause and that condition, one makes offerings and attends to those who possess great wealth and have upright and correct conduct, until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear. Some, upon seeing, remember the patience of tranquility, and generate increased aspiration. By that cause and that condition, from completely abandoning slander, harsh speech, frivolous talk, and hatred, one transforms until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear. Some, upon seeing, remember renouncing and diligently engaging in effort, and generate increased aspiration. By that cause and that condition, completely abandoning household life, taking up the Dharma of non-household life, diligently striving with extreme effort, striving to cultivate the supreme, one transforms until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear. Some, upon seeing, remember completely abandoning the distracted mind and equally practicing meditation, and generate increased aspiration. By that cause and that condition, liking mountains, gardens, remote places, and solitary places, day and night exerting effort in meditating on samadhi, until entering the great city of complete nirvana, free from fear.
