Having spoken thus, the great Brahma, the essence of the gods, listened again to the Blessed One. The Blessed One spoke to the great Brahma, the essence of the gods, saying: There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt upon or practiced. If yogis follow even a few of these evil practices, they will not fully accomplish even the root of virtue in the desire realm. If they have already accomplished it, they will immediately lose and degenerate, let alone attain the samadhis of the form and formless realms, and the three vehicles or the one vehicle. What are the ten? For example, some in the world wish to meditate on samadhi, but are preoccupied with the necessities of life and are afflicted by afflictions; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but their discipline is lax and they commit many misdeeds; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but have inverted views and are attached to worldly omens of good and bad, and their body and mind are not tamed; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but their minds are restless and agitated, and they do not incline towards the noble path, and their senses are unrestrained; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but delight in slander and create discord; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but speak harshly, revile the noble ones, and are domineering; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but speak frivolous words and lie; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but are filled with desire and jealousy, and dislike the benefits, respect, and gains of others; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but are filled with hatred and generate harmful thoughts towards sentient beings; some wish to meditate on samadhi, but hold wrong views and believe that there is no cause and effect. Great Brahma, thus it should be known that these are the ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt upon or practiced. If those who meditate on samadhi follow even a few of these evil practices, they will not fully accomplish even the virtue of the desire realm. If they have already accomplished it, they will immediately lose and degenerate, let alone attain the samadhis of the form and formless realms, and the three vehicles or the one vehicle. Great Brahma,
