Furthermore, there are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced. If those who meditate on samadhi possess any of these evil deeds, they cannot perfectly accomplish samadhi. If they have previously accomplished it, they will immediately lose and regress. What are these ten? They are: delighting in and clinging to things to be done, delighting in and clinging to idle talk, delighting in and clinging to sleep, delighting in and clinging to seeking gain and honor, delighting in and clinging to beautiful forms, delighting in and clinging to pleasant sounds, delighting in and clinging to fragrant smells, delighting in and clinging to delicious tastes, delighting in and clinging to soft touches, and delighting in and clinging to thoughts and investigations. Great Brahma, it should be known in this way that these ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced, if those who meditate on samadhi possess any of these evil deeds, they cannot perfectly accomplish samadhi. If they have previously accomplished it, they will immediately lose and regress. If samadhi has not been cultivated, then no matter what other accumulation of virtuous dharmas is made, it will be meaningless, because for the sake of one's own enjoyment and giving with a greedy mind, evil dharmas of mind and mental factors will arise. Therefore, one will also violate the laws of kings and great ministers. To some, one will scold and rebuke. To some, one will whip. To some, one will cut off limbs. Due to these causes, one will be afflicted by severe diseases, experience suffering for a long time, have a short life, and after death, one will also fall into any of the three lower realms, even falling into the Avici Hell. Like Kudraka, Aradaka, Tishukuparaka, Devadatta, and others, having fallen from meditation, falling into the Avici Hell, experiencing countless kinds of unbearable great sufferings. At that time, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya: You and those monks who dwell in the borderlands and meditate on samadhi, your dwellings are excellent.

Residing in secluded places, using the finest bedding, enjoying the finest foods, and being allowed to abstain from all monastic duties. Why is that? If meditators are preoccupied with the necessities of life, negative mental states and mental events will arise, and all meditation will fail to be accomplished, leading to falling into the Avici hell and experiencing countless unbearable great sufferings. If meditators are endowed with the necessities of life, then many unaccomplished meditations will be accomplished, and those previously accomplished will not decline. Therefore, from the non-arising of all non-virtuous dharmas to the non-arising of vast non-virtuous thoughts and discriminations as described in the scriptures, from being born as a high-ranking god to attaining nirvana can be achieved. If meditators have not accomplished many meditations, then they should not sleep during the first and last parts of the night, but diligently study and practice, completely abandon distractions, be content with little desire, not be attached to anything, and completely abandon desire, hatred, anger, concealment, strife, harm, pride, arrogance, jealousy, stinginess, slander, harsh speech, lies, worldly disputes, and all carelessness. If someone strives in this way, then Brahma, Indra, the Four Great Kings, the Wheel-Turning King, and others will praise, extol, prostrate, respect, offer, serve, and so on, and even countless billions of donations can be accepted, let alone accepting offerings from the royal caste, Brahmin caste, Vaishya caste, and so on. If those who have not attained meditation can still possess those praises, extolments, prostrations, respects, offerings, services, donations, and offerings, then what need is there to mention those who have attained meditation? Then the Blessed One spoke in verse: By meditating on samadhi, doubts will be cut off; apart from that, others cannot. Therefore, meditate on samadhi.
