Immeasurable. Countless. Is it to be spoken of? Is it to be counted? Is it to be numbered? Even an analogy cannot bear it, it is so great! Son of good family, furthermore, consider this: A person with great power appears in the world and, for the sake of the Sangha of the four directions, constructs temples and dwellings that are exceedingly fine and spacious, equal to the four continents. In all those dwellings, he arranges to have beds, clothing, food, medicine for sickness, and all necessities of life. The Tathagata, the Shravakas, and all the great attendant retinues of the Bodhisattvas reside there. He diligently engages in various virtuous practices, day and night without laziness, and continuously makes offerings and shows reverence for hundreds of thousands of millions of years. Is the accumulation of merit of that person very great? The Bodhisattva Mahasattva Kshitigarbha replied: It is exceedingly great! Bhagavan, it is exceedingly great! Sugata, the accumulation of merit of that person is immeasurable, countless. It cannot be spoken of, counted, or numbered. Even an analogy cannot bear it. Only a Buddha can know it; others cannot. The Bhagavan said: It is so, it is so. It is just as you have said. Son of good family, furthermore, consider this: A person with great power appears in the world and, for the sake of the Sangha of the four directions, constructs temples and dwellings that are exceedingly fine and spacious, equal to ten sets of the four continents. In all those dwellings, he arranges to have beds, clothing, food, medicine, and all necessities of life. The Tathagata, the Shravakas, and all the attendants of the great Sangha of Bodhisattvas reside there. He diligently engages in various virtuous practices, day and night without laziness, and continuously makes offerings and shows reverence for hundreds of thousands of millions of years.

It is so. The accumulation of merit of that Tathagata is immeasurable, immeasurable, unspeakable, uncountable, incomparable, only the Buddha knows it, not others. The Blessed One said: Son of good family, it is so, it is so, as you said. Son of good family, again, it is like this, if a person with great power appears in the world, for the sake of the Buddha's relics, builds a stupa that is extremely beautiful, tall and wide, equal to the three thousand great thousand worlds, as said before, for the sake of the Sangha of the four directions, builds monasteries and dwellings, compared to this accumulation of merit, for the sake of the Buddha's relics, the accumulation of merit of building a stupa is greater, one percent is not close, even one thousandth is not close, one hundred thousandth is not close, one kotith is not close, one inconceivableth is not close, the fraction of number, the fraction of calculation, the fraction of measurement, the fraction of simile, the fraction of cause is also not close. Son of good family, again, it is like this, if there are great Arhats who have attained Paramita, possess eight liberations, and are absorbed in meditation, filling this three thousand great thousand world, like rice sprouts, or sesame, or flax, or reeds, or sugarcane forests, all of them are bound by the five bonds, after hundreds of thousands of kotis of years, a person with great power appears in the world, for the sake of seeking merit, releases all their bonds, bathes all those Arhats with fragrant water, offers Dharma robes and alms bowls for hundreds of thousands of years, and gives them dwellings, beds, clothes, alms, medicine for diseases, and various kinds of living supplies as they wish, and after those Arhats have passed into Nirvana, he also makes offerings, burns them, and collects their relics, with seven kinds of precious
