How then, should emptiness be comprehended? Emptiness is neither a thing, nor is it a non-thing. If emptiness were a thing, then emptiness would become conditioned and impermanent. If emptiness were a non-thing, then emptiness would become non-empty. Therefore, emptiness is neither a thing, nor is it a non-thing. Thus, emptiness should be comprehended through selflessness. How then, should emptiness be comprehended through the absence of sentient beings? Sentient beings are neither empty, nor are they non-empty. If sentient beings were empty, then even killing would not become a sin. However, if they were not empty, then they would become permanent. Therefore, the Blessed One also said that sentient beings are neither permanent, nor impermanent, neither conditioned, nor unconditioned. Thus, emptiness should be comprehended through the absence of sentient beings. How then, should emptiness be comprehended through the absence of life? Emptiness neither lives nor dies. For emptiness, the eye is empty of self and what belongs to self. Whatever is empty of self and what belongs to self neither lives nor dies. Similarly, the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty of self and what belongs to self. Whatever is empty of self and what belongs to self neither lives nor dies. Thus, emptiness should be comprehended through the absence of life. How then, should emptiness be comprehended through the absence of a person? Emptiness is not counted as a person, emptiness is not counted as a dharma. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases are empty, and grasping these, one designates a person. Whatever is grasped and designated cannot be said to exist or not exist. Thus, emptiness should be comprehended through the absence of a person. How then, should emptiness be comprehended through the absence of a lord? Since there is no dharma that is liberated from emptiness, there is no dharma that can become the lord of emptiness. Thus, emptiness should be comprehended through the absence of a lord. How then, should emptiness be comprehended through the absence of birth? Emptiness is unborn. If emptiness were to arise, then emptiness

It will not become itself. In that way, emptiness will become non-emptiness. If the born is not emptiness, and emptiness itself arises, then the unborn will not become non-emptiness. Thus, because there is no birth, if emptiness arises, then emptiness should be understood. How should emptiness be understood because there is no cessation? Whatever is born ceases, and emptiness is not born. How can what is not born cease? Thus, because there is no cessation, emptiness should be understood. How should emptiness be understood because it does not manifestly accumulate? Emptiness is neither done nor doing. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases are empty, and grasping them establishes emptiness. Thus, emptiness should be understood because it does not manifestly accumulate. How should emptiness be understood because there is no agent? Emptiness is not driven by anything to say, 'Do it like this, do it like that.' Thus, emptiness should be understood because there is no agent. How should emptiness be understood because there is no owner? Emptiness is not an object, and because there is no object, it is separated from mind, intellect, and consciousness. Thus, emptiness should be understood because there is no owner. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva should understand emptiness through these ten ways of entering the Dharma. Son of good family, a Bodhisattva should understand the unfavorable aspects of emptiness through ten ways of entering the Dharma. What are these ten? They are: ignorance is an unfavorable aspect, attachment is an unfavorable aspect, karma is an unfavorable aspect, consciousness is an unfavorable aspect, grasping is an unfavorable aspect, views are an unfavorable aspect, doubt is an unfavorable aspect, clinging to supreme views is an unfavorable aspect, pride is an unfavorable aspect, and excitement is an unfavorable aspect. These ten aspects are unfavorable to emptiness. Among them, ignorance has two counts and four aspects. What are the two counts? They are counted as the obscuration of afflictions and the obscuration of knowledge.

are counted. What are the four types? Those arising from the cause of manifest attachment to desire, those arising from the cause of manifest attachment to form, those arising from the cause of manifest attachment to the formless, and those arising from the cause of non-materiality. Of these, craving has two bases and four aspects. What are the two bases? The base of existence and the base of enjoyment. What are the four aspects? Craving for desire, craving for form, craving for the formless, and craving for non-materiality. Of these, karma has one arising, three forms, and three ripenings. What is the one arising? Mental karma. What are the three forms? Arising from the body, arising from speech, and arising from the mind. What are the three ripenings? The ripening of black karma is black, the ripening of white karma is white, and the ripening of mixed black and white karma is mixed black and white. Of these, consciousness has six types: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. These six types are consciousness, namely, focusing on the inverted, focusing on the non-inverted, and without focus. Of these, focusing on the inverted refers to the desire of ordinary individuals who are distracted and whose minds have become inverted, and arising from the causes of form and the formless. Focusing on the non-inverted refers to the cause of nirvana for hearers and solitary realizers. Liberation from both of these is the absence of focus for bodhisattvas, which becomes the cause of the Buddha's Dharma. Of these, grasping is the four causes of existence: desire grasping, view grasping, ethical conduct and discipline grasping, and self-assertion grasping. Of these, views are of two types: those with wrong knowledge and those with an object. Of these, those with wrong knowledge refer to wrong views. Those with an object refer to even clinging to and manifestly delighting in nirvana, these are those with an object, the Buddhas
