Giving to all, yet not expecting anything in return. Said: What is the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas? Said: It is merely wishing for all sentient beings to attain enlightenment first, and not oneself. When this teaching was being expounded, seventy-six thousand beings generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Two hundred monks, without attachment, had their minds completely liberated from defilements. Then, at that time, a son of the gods named Good Mind (བཟང་སེམས་) gathered in that very assembly and, being seated, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is the root and basis of the Bodhisattva's enlightenment of the Buddhas? The Blessed One replied: Son of the gods, the root and basis of the Buddhas' enlightenment is the generation of a mind of perfect intention. Son of the gods, Good Mind, asked: What is the sphere of activity for one who has thus generated the mind of enlightenment? The Blessed One replied: Whatever giving there is, its sphere of activity also tends towards not expecting fruition. Undefiled morality, its sphere of activity also tends towards non-conceptual morality. Patience, its sphere of activity also tends towards non-duality. Diligence, its sphere of activity also tends towards non-action. Meditation, its sphere of activity also tends towards all extremely tranquil dharmas. Wisdom, its sphere of activity also tends towards non-proliferation. Seeking to hear, its sphere of activity also tends towards the inexpressible. Tranquility, its sphere of activity also tends towards extreme tranquility and complete tranquility. Insight, its sphere of activity also tends towards all dharmas being unteachable. Mindfulness, its sphere of activity also tends towards no mindfulness and no mental activity. Right exertion, its sphere of activity also tends towards not manifestly accumulating. The basis of miraculous power, its sphere of activity also tends towards the complete cessation of all desires. Faculties, its sphere of activity also tends towards those dharmas that transcend the faculties.
