field. In whatever Buddha-field the Buddha's teachings are found and obtained, one should think of that as a race that should be led astray. They also think like this: All good conduct and bad conduct arise from the mind. Those who dwell in bad conduct are born in the lower realms. Those who dwell in good conduct are born as gods and humans. Those who completely abandon both become Buddhas, the Bhagavat. Thinking like this is the correct Dharma-holding of the Bodhisattvas, and they will quickly attain perfect and complete enlightenment. Some say that holding the Dharma correctly is like this: All of these are merely dependent arising, and there is no Dharma that is liberated from dependent arising. What is the Dharma that arises from dependence? Whatever arises from dependence is unborn, and there is no Dharma that is inherently established. Otherwise, there is only designation, terminology, imputation, symbol, and manifestation of ultimate reality, which are not non-existent. This is the correct Dharma-holding of the teacher, and it is the essence of the teachings of all Buddhas. Bhagavan, some Bodhisattvas think like this: What is called birth, what Dharma is called birth? They do not truly see the Dharma that is called birth. Possessing this thought, they give rise to the acceptance that all Dharmas are unborn. Some think like this: What is called death, what Dharma ceases here? What ceases and is called death? When they discern in this way, they do not truly see the Dharmas that cease and are called death. This is the correct Dharma-holding, and one will obtain nectar in the belly. Bhagavan, the minds of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are not attached to all Dharmas, and they are pleased by those who are unintentional and non-abiding. Bhagavan, the Dharma is without obscuration, and it is obtained by those whose minds are without obscuration. Bhagavan, the Dharma is equal.

This is enlightenment, which is realized by those who have no unequal mind. O Blessed One, the more one seeks, the more one is bound. Not seeking is liberation. Therefore, those who seek liberation should not seek all seeking. O Blessed One, this is the true declaration of the Dharma. O Blessed One, moreover, what is called the true declaration of the Dharma is the word of equality. This is the word of profundity. This is the word of non-grasping. This is the word of no basis. This is the word of no alaya. This is the word of no support. This is the word of Suchness, Thusness, and non-erroneous Thusness. O Blessed One, this is the true declaration of the Dharma. Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: O Blessed One, as I understand the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, Bodhisattvas, great beings, who hear what the Tathagata and these Bodhisattvas, great beings, have said, and having heard it, believe and practice it accordingly, they think that there is no true declaration of the Dharma. Why is that? Because for those who are not pleased, there is no true declaration of the Dharma. For those who have not initiated, there is no true declaration of the Dharma. But for those who regard the Dharma spoken by the noble ones as rare, as precious, and as medicine, they have the true declaration of the Dharma. O Blessed One, those who do not praise themselves and do not disparage others have the true declaration of the Dharma. O Blessed One, those who have a mind of loving-kindness towards the noble ones and a mind of acceptance towards the non-noble ones have the true declaration of the Dharma. Those who do not see themselves as great and do not see others as inferior have the true declaration of the Dharma. O Blessed One, those who are equal to the equal, equal to the unequal, equal to the equal and unequal, and do not even think of equal and unequal, have the true declaration of the Dharma. O Blessed One, those who, having heard one word, enter into and comprehend the meaning and categories of a hundred thousand words, and understand the meaning

Those who do not perceive (Buddha) and (the world) as a duality, it can be said that they truly proclaim the Dharma. World-Honored One, if after hearing the Dharma one is neither calmed nor distracted, after hearing the Dharma one is neither bound nor liberated, after hearing the Dharma one neither enters nor exits, after hearing the Dharma one neither decreases nor increases, after hearing the Dharma one neither believes nor becomes angry, after hearing the Dharma one neither transmigrates nor completely escapes from suffering, World-Honored One, I think that those who realize this Dharma-nature through the correct proclamation of the Dharma, it can be said that they truly proclaim the Dharma. World-Honored One, is what I say in accordance with the correct proclamation of the Dharma? The World-Honored One replied: Shariputra, what you say is in accordance with the correct proclamation of the Dharma. Shariputra, what you have said is the Dharma realized by the Tathagatas of the past, future, and present. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana said to the World-Honored One: World-Honored One, if a Bodhisattva thinks, 'I will correctly proclaim the Dharma,' then he cannot truly proclaim the Dharma. What is the reason for this? Because he is attached to the self, and thinks, 'I am explaining, and these people are listening.' Those who are free from the concept of self do not cling to the self to proclaim the Dharma, nor do they cling to others to proclaim the Dharma, nor do they cling to both to proclaim the Dharma, nor do they cling to latent habits to proclaim the Dharma. What is the reason for this? World-Honored One, all clinging arises from things that do not exist. World-Honored One, anything that is clung to is not truly existent. Therefore, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who fully understand clinging, what they cling to is the Dharma. What is the reason for this? World-Honored One, for example, just as the things manifested by a magician are, so too is the clinging of a Bodhisattva who fully understands clinging.
