Because it is related to dependent arising, it is the Sangha of those who turn the wheel of Dharma. Because they possess great compassion, it is the Sangha of those who are irreversible. Because they have accumulated all the collections of merit, it is the Sangha of those who are bound by one lifetime. Thus he thinks. The Bodhisattva, thus recollecting the Sangha, thinks to himself: "Whatever are the true qualities of the Sangha, I and all sentient beings should also accomplish them." This is called the Bodhisattva's mindfulness of the Sangha, the close placement of mindfulness. What is the Bodhisattva's mindfulness of ethics, the close placement of mindfulness? Here, the Bodhisattva thinks to himself: "Whatever worldly or transmundane perfections there may be, all of them should be regarded as arising from ethics." Why is that? Because ethics is the place of all those perfections. For example, the earth is the place of medicine, grass, and all forests. Similarly, ethics is the place of all those perfections. The Bodhisattva who dwells in the place of ethics is the object of offerings for the world with its gods. He also perfects the Dharma of giving. The Bodhisattva who dwells in the place of ethics experiences joy. With joy in his mind, there is no regret. With no regret, he obtains supreme joy. With supreme joy, his body and mind become exceedingly pliant. With his body and mind exceedingly pliant, he obtains bliss, that is, he obtains samadhi. With his mind evenly placed, he sees things as they truly are. The Bodhisattva who sees things as they truly are develops great compassion for sentient beings. He thinks to himself: "I should accomplish for all sentient beings this door of samadhi, and the seeing of all dharmas as they truly are." Therefore, driven by that great compassion, he perfects the training in higher ethics, higher mind, and higher wisdom, and ultimately attains the unexcelled perfect and complete Bodhi.
