The space between the grounds is the truth of the arising of all the wisdom of the Tathagata, which is realized through the path that is taught. These are the ten truths of the Bodhisattvas. Among them, what are the nine samadhis in which the Bodhisattvas gradually abide? Here, the Bodhisattva is secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing vitarka, possessing vicara, and abides having fully accomplished the first dhyana, which is endowed with joy and happiness born of seclusion. Among them, desires are the unfavorable aspect of the first dhyana, being secluded from those cravings. Among them, sinful and unwholesome dharmas are attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the root of which is killing, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle chatter, covetousness, malice, and wrong view. This is called sinful and unwholesome dharmas, being secluded from those is the first dhyana. Being together with vitarka is possessing vitarka, what are those vitarkas? They are those vitarkas that are in accordance with the first dhyana, contemplating as in a ritual, and those are also tamed, therefore those are called vitarka, namely knowing, comprehending, vicara, extremely good contemplation, and attention are vitarka. Among them, what is vicara? Namely, on those very vitarkas that are in accordance with the first dhyana, vicara, discriminating vicara, near vicara, completely enjoying, attention, and the mind following along are vicara. Being together with those is possessing vitarka, the first dhyana possessing vicara. Joy and happiness are born of seclusion, therefore it is called joy and happiness born of seclusion. Abiding having fully accomplished, what is meant by fully accomplished is guarding, the guarder, concealing, the concealer, tasting, and manifest joy. The Bodhisattva abiding in that first dhyana, in order to comprehend the forbearance of non-arising dharmas, obtains intention and desire, that forbearance of non-arising dharmas.

Through aspiration and desire, one recognizes the first dhyana as the core. Then, one strives for the second dhyana, pacifying and nearly pacifying the vitarka (thought) and vicara (analysis) of the first dhyana. From these, the mind becomes completely tranquil, seeking the cause for the perfect accomplishment of the second dhyana. Therefore, because of being free from vitarka and vicara, the interior is completely clear, and the mind's continuum becomes one, without vitarka, without vicara, endowed with joy, the second dhyana is perfectly accomplished and one abides in it. Here, 'completely clear interior' means that whatever dharmas are discordant aspects of that second dhyana are pacified and cleared away, therefore it is called 'completely clear interior.' 'Continuum becomes one' means that all the vitarka and vicara of the first dhyana are completely pacified, and like the water of the ocean, one obtains a single taste. For example, just as when waters flow into the great ocean, they all become one taste of salt, similarly, when a Bodhisattva enters the samadhi of the second dhyana, all the vitarka and vicara of the first dhyana are pacified and become one taste, and that is called samadhi. From that samadhi, joy arises towards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and because of joy towards the Three Jewels, virtuous dharmas are perfected. From that, one obtains a desire for the forbearance of non-arising dharmas that is exceedingly blazing, exceedingly bright, and exceedingly pleasing. Because of the desire for forbearance of non-arising dharmas, one is not attached to that second dhyana, but universally seeks the third dhyana. One thinks thus: 'Joy is an obstacle to the third dhyana.' Then, having become detached from that joy, one becomes endowed with equanimity, mindfulness, and complete purity, abiding in the third dhyana, which the noble ones describe as being without joy and abiding in bliss. Having obtained detachment from the joy born of samadhi, that bliss without joy is not permanent bliss, but is of the nature of exhaustion and destruction; it is impermanent, unstable, not lasting, and cannot be trusted, one obtains such a mind.
