They also serve those who serve the heretics and those who practice like Brahma. Moreover, this is with a mind free from defilement, not with a mind full of defilement. And, in this way, may this root of virtue be dedicated so that all sentient beings may be born without being stained by the impurity of the womb. Moreover, this is wishing from the bottom of one's heart. Son of good family, if you possess these ten qualities, bodhisattvas will be born without being stained by the impurity of the womb. Son of good family, if you possess these ten qualities, bodhisattvas are those who have renounced the household life. What are the ten? They are: those who do not associate closely. Those who live without commotion. Those who turn their backs on worldly things. Those who are free from craving for worldly things. Those who are not disturbed by the faults of worldly things. Those who respect and diligently practice the precepts established by the Tathagata. Those who are content with coarse clothing, alms, bedding, medicine, and utensils. Those who are free from begging bowls, robes, and utensils, etc. Those who always have a fearful mind and are weary of worldly things. Those who delight in solitude and are always diligent in meditation. Son of good family, if you possess these ten qualities, bodhisattvas are those who have renounced the household life. Son of good family, if you possess these ten qualities, bodhisattvas are those whose livelihood is completely pure. What are the ten? They are: those who are free from hypocritical and flattering gains. Those who are free from gains through hints. Those who are free from gains through persuasion. Those who are free from gains sought improperly. Those who are free from non-dharmic gains. Those who are free from impure gains. Those who are not attached to gains. Those who are not fixated on gains. Those who do not have a nature of complete indecisiveness. Those who are content with the gains of the Dharma. Son of good family, how does a bodhisattva become free from hypocritical and flattering gains? Son of good family, here, a bodhisattva, in order to obtain gains

In short, one does not act artificially with the body, does not act artificially with speech, and does not act artificially with the mind. How does one not act artificially with the body? When a Bodhisattva makes offerings and sees the benefactor of the offering, he does not alter his conduct. How does one not alter one's conduct? One does not look with a stiff neck, does not look with weariness, and does not look without covering. One does not lift and lower one's steps hastily. Thus, one does not act artificially with the body. How does one not act artificially with speech? A Bodhisattva does not speak flatteringly for the sake of gain, does not speak softly, does not speak pleasingly, and does not utter words that follow others. Thus, one does not act artificially with speech. How does one not act artificially with the mind? When a Bodhisattva makes offerings, or when the benefactor bestows gain, one does not show a small desire with words while generating desire in the mind. Son of good family, for example, showing a small desire with words while desiring gain in the mind is an inner torment. Thus, one does not act artificially with the mind. Thus, a Bodhisattva is free from artificiality and deceitful gain. How is one free from the gain of hinting? When a Bodhisattva makes offerings, if he sees the benefactor, he does not hint that he is poor in clothing, that he is poor in alms bowl, or that he is afflicted by illness. He does not beg, nor does he speak to the benefactor to ask for something. Thus, a Bodhisattva is free from the gain of hinting. How is one free from the gain of indirect solicitation? When a Bodhisattva makes offerings and sees the benefactor, he does not say, "So-and-so, a great benefactor, gave me such-and-such a valuable thing, and I also did such-and-such a great help for him. He also recognized that I have morality, am learned, and have few desires, so he gave me these things. I also took it with a compassionate mind towards him." He does not speak such words. Thus, a Bodhisattva

It is being free from the gains of base flattery. How does a Bodhisattva become free from gains sought through improper means? Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not seek gains when the body is wounded or the mind is wounded. A wound of the body is like this: running for the sake of gain, running everywhere, and behaving contrary to discipline. A wound of the mind is like this: longing for gain, compared to those practicing pure conduct, having much harmful intent towards the gains others have. Thus, a Bodhisattva is free from gains sought through improper means. How does a Bodhisattva become free from non-dharmic gains? Son of good family, in this case, a Bodhisattva does not use deceptive scales, does not use deceptive measures, does not harm trust, and does not accumulate food to obtain gains. Thus, a Bodhisattva is free from non-dharmic gains. How does a Bodhisattva become free from impure gains? In this case, a Bodhisattva does not take or claim as his own anything mixed with stupa property, mixed with Dharma property, mixed with Sangha property, ungiven, or unpermitted, and does not generate attachment. Thus, a Bodhisattva is free from impure gains. How is a Bodhisattva without attachment to gains? Son of good family, in this case, even if a Bodhisattva obtains gains, he does not claim them as his own, does not consider them wealth, and does not accumulate them. He gives them from time to time to renunciants, Brahmins, parents, friends, ministers, relatives, and servants, and he also enjoys them from time to time himself. When enjoying them, he enjoys them without attachment and without clinging. Even if he does not obtain gains, he does not generate a dejected mind, and he does not become completely discouraged. He does not hold disbelief towards those who give and the patrons. This is gain that is in accordance with the Dharma, belonging to the Sangha, praised by the Tathagatas, not despised by Bodhisattvas, praised by the gods, not criticized by those practicing pure conduct, and is contentment.
