Not too long and not too near, in places where there is no muddy water and land, clean and without dirt, easy to obtain, in places where trees are lush, flowers are lush, fruits are lush, leaves are lush, there are no fierce beasts, there are caves, With medicinal plants, without obstacles, easy to walk, reside in places of serene non-duality. Residing in those places, he recites and hears what he has previously recited and heard, three times a day and three times at night, the sound is neither too loud nor too soft, the senses are not coarse, not scattered outwards, living by the faith in his heart, and holding onto the words, not clinging to signs, not disturbed by sleep, reciting with his mouth. If a king, a great minister, or another Brahmin, Kshatriya, villager, or countryman comes to the dwelling of a monastic bhikkhu, he should respectfully say to them, "Welcome." Then he should say to the king, "Please sit as on a laid-out seat." If they sit, both should sit. If they do not sit, neither should sit. If the senses become coarse, one should praise the king, saying, "In the direction you govern, bhikkhus and Brahmins who are disciplined, virtuous, and learned, who are not disturbed by coarse people and monkeys, this is a well-obtained opportunity." If he is stable, tamed, and his senses are completely pacified, and if he is suitable to teach the Dharma, one should teach him various Dharmas. If he does not rejoice in hearing various Dharmas, one should teach him the Dharma that corresponds to renunciation. If he does not rejoice in hearing the Dharma that corresponds to renunciation, one should teach him the vast qualities of the Tathagata. If Brahmins, Kshatriyas, villagers, or country people come, one should also do what is appropriate according to the circumstances. In this way, extensive learning can satisfy the minds of those who listen to the Dharma, and those beings will also develop joy, faith, and admiration for him. It can also be a force to counteract the arising of all afflictions. Cultivating the power of extensive learning.
