To beings tamed by the Shravaka Vehicle, one teaches the path of the Shravaka Vehicle, but not the path of the Bodhisattva. To beings tamed by Omniscience itself, one teaches the path of Omniscience itself, but not the path of the Pratyekabuddha. To beings tamed by the Pratyekabuddha, one teaches the path of the Pratyekabuddha, but not the path of Omniscience itself. To beings who are manifestly attached to self, and to those who are manifestly attached to dharma, one teaches the path of selflessness and the path of emptiness, but not the path of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, person, or individual. To beings who abide in the two extremes, one teaches the path that is free from the two extremes, but one does not teach abiding in the two extremes. To beings whose minds are distracted, one teaches the path of Shamatha and Vipassana, but one does not teach the path of distraction. To beings who are manifestly delighted in elaboration, one teaches the path of Suchness, but one does not teach the path of children who are manifestly delighted in elaboration. To beings who are manifestly delighted in Samsara, one teaches the path of Nirvana, but one does not teach the path of Samsara. To beings who have entered a wrong path, one teaches the path that is not a wrong path and is without thorns, but one does not teach the path that is full of the thorns of affliction. Son of good family, Bodhisattvas who possess these ten dharmas are those who teach the path without reversing it. Son of good family, Bodhisattvas who possess ten dharmas are those who constantly and continuously maintain equanimity of mind. What are the ten? They are as follows: One abides, having established mindfulness very closely on the body. And on feelings, mind, and dharmas, as well as places, solitary places, villages, cities, towns, fields, regions, the retinues of the king's palace, as well as gain, respect, fame, sound, verses, as well as the precepts established by the Tathagata, as well as near afflictions, pervasive afflictions, and all encompassing afflictions, one abides, having established mindfulness very closely. Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva abide, having established mindfulness very closely on the body? Son of

This son, whatever sinful and unwholesome dharmas a Bodhisattva possesses in relation to the body, he thoroughly examines them with correct wisdom and completely abandons them. Starting from the soles of the feet and going upwards to the crown of the head, he contemplates the faults of the body. He also contemplates the body as being without self. He contemplates the body as being impermanent, decaying, connected by tendons, having an unpleasant odor, being foul-smelling, and having an unattractive color. When he contemplates in this way, thoughts of the body as a body, attachment to the body, delight in the body, grasping at the body as self, and clinging to the body will not arise. Because of that cause, that condition, that basis, he will not be controlled by the dharmas associated with the body. Otherwise, the dharmas associated with the body will be controlled by it. Thus, he dwells with mindfulness closely set on the body. How does a Bodhisattva dwell with mindfulness closely set on feelings? Here, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: "All these feelings are suffering, but foolish and inverted people cling to them as happiness. Ignorant people cling to suffering as pleasure, but noble ones understand that all is suffering, and therefore they strive to abandon it." He also guides other beings into that teaching, and he himself will follow them in learning. By contemplating in this way, he dwells with mindfulness closely set on feelings. He has no attachment to those feelings, nor anger, but he strives to abandon them. He also guides others into that teaching. Thus, he dwells with mindfulness closely set on feelings. How does a Bodhisattva dwell with mindfulness closely set on the mind? He thinks thus: "This mind delights in perceiving impermanence as permanence, delights in perceiving suffering as happiness, delights in perceiving no-self as self, delights in perceiving impurity as purity, is wavering and unstable, changes rapidly, is the root of afflictions, is the door to the lower realms, and is the proximate affliction."
